Rem 700 with Timney not cocking

I have a Rem 700 with Timney 517 trigger that was working perfectly fine.

I disassembled for cleaning, and now the rifle isn't cocking anymore.

I removed bolt, cleaned everything up again, but can't seem to figure it out.

When I put the bolt back in, and cycle, the rifle doesn't appear to cock. Trigger can not be pulled back.

Any ideas on what I can try to fix it?

Could it be something with the trigger? I installed the trigger myself shortly after I bought the rifle (at least a year or so ago, I think), and have used the rifle multiple times since then without issue. I have not adjusted the trigger, so none of the set screws have been moved, as far as I can tell.

Any help would be appreciated. I'd hate to bring it to a gunsmith, since its such a busy time of the year, but if worse comes to worst, I suppose that is an option.

Another option could be to just buy a new trigger, but honestly, I don't know if the issue lies with the trigger or not. Would hate to spent $100+ only to not have it work.

    Thanks.

Possible safety is not engaged properly?...

ETA: IIRC, there's some finicky set of the safety when installing... I could be wrong though, as I've only installed one and it was quite a while back...

Thanks. My trigger came with the safety installed, so there was nothing I needed to do to the safety (some triggers come without a safety). It was an easy install, followed the directions, took just a few minutes.

Haven't messed with the safety. It appears to work correctly, but I don't know.

If the trigger cannot be pulled back with the safety off then its in the trigger. Needs to be cleaned out.

Sorry, I misunderstood your OP... thought the trigger was removed when you cleaned... I'm sure one of the bolt action guys will have the answer...

Did you pull the firing pin out of the bolt?
Did you remove the trigger from the receiver?
Does your bolt have a "J" lock?

With the bolt removed from the rifle and the safety off, is the sear spring loaded?
You should be able to hold the trigger to the rear and move the sear up and down with a ball point pen or punch.

I pulled the firing pin out of the bolt and cleaned it when I was trying to figure out why it wasn't working (used the string and coin method). Reassembled and it still didn't work.

I did not remove the trigger from the receiver. Did not touch the trigger at all that I am aware of so am not sure what happened. I removed the rifle from the stock, removed the bolt, cleaned everything with brake cleaner, and re-oiled. Then I reassembled, and when doing the function check, I noticed that the trigger wasn't resetting.

Are you sure you screwed the shroud ALL the way back into the bolt body?

Yes. Just checked again to be sure. Anyhow, it wasn't working before I took the bolt apart. I only took it apart afterwards, to check that there wasn't something not right with the bolt.

Would it help if I took some pics?

I can take a pic of the trigger, the bolt, anything else?

If it would help, I can post some pics later tonight.

Take the bolt out and then push down on the top of the trigger where the cocking piece would normally sit.

It should stay put. Now with the safety off pull the trigger and it should drop about 1/8 inch. If it doesn't drop get some rosignol cigarette lighter fluid and squirt the living schit out of the trigger. Let it drip dry then shake it out.
                          Repeat the earlier test.

I ran into a problem with a new Timney trigger on my Rem 700. When I tightened the bolts in to spec, it bound up. Trigger all locked up. Loosen the bolts 1/2-turn and all was fine. Turned out to be a minor clearancing issue that I cleaned up with a Dremel and sandpaper. Maybe that offers some clues as the Timney was supposed to be a slam dunk solution. Not so for me.
