Weapon Intended Use vs Available Kind of Use

I really like the new Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor and plan to get one, but I cannot escape the question of “why”. My logical brain screams, “Why are you buying a 1000+ yard capable gun and shoot it at your local 100 yard range (the longest range available)”? Uh… Maybe for the same illogical reason that people buy 180+ mph cars and motorcycles in a 65 mph world, a question that I still cannot answer adequately well myself.

So, for those in a similar situation, limited to a short distance gun range, what do you get out of firing a long range rifle at short distances? I appreciate the workmanship, looks, operation, feel and power of the gun, and maybe that is enough, but it is hard to ignore the bothersome fact that I am buying a product that excels at something I cannot utilize at all. Maybe the best and real answer is simply “because I just want it”.

I do really envy you guys who can shoot out to longer distances. Generally speaking, over 100 yards or better means a 200+ mile round trip.

I have driven 400 miles (one way) to go to matches dozens of times.

Our respective life situations are almost certainly different, and cannot be compared.

I went through the same thing. I wanted a fifty for a long time. Every time I found a decent deal on ammo I snatched it up because nobody was loading fifty ammo back then. Even the military was just blasting off old stockpiles. My local range was 600 yards and I could only get 1000 yards if I could talk an RO I knew into letting me in when it was closed. Going into the desert didn't appeal at all - having to hump through the brush 1000 yards each direction to set up targets.

So I decided not to get it and started selling off some of my ammo. I still have basically 5 lifetimes' supply if I do get a fifty.

Circle S is outside of Petaluma (62miles one way) and has a 300yd range.

I drove 300 miles (one way) to get lost and miss my match that had targets out to 1400yds.

An RPR isn't exactly an extravagant purchase. If you like, get it. Most folks end up with a few guns that they don't use that much anyway.

Get a heavy barrel .22LR instead, you will feel better.

Purchase what you like and shoot it. Who cares how far you are shooting it. Sure, some will argue that you can save money by going with a smaller caliber but it's your money. I have the convenience of living where I can easily drive less than an hour and shoot as far as I want. If I had to move to an area with no range longer than 100 yards, I would still shoot my larger calibers as I enjoy shooting them. I am sure that many at your local 100 range are shooting much larger calibers than a 6.5 CM.

If you can shoot a 357 well at 100 yards, better still a .44-40, you have my respect.
