Just something else to consider, when you are out hunting, place that have larger and interesting game to shoot also tend to have bears nearby. It isn't just about what you are hunting, it is also being prepared for a field self defense situation.

I am a long time fan of the .300 Win Mag. I had a Remington 700 sendero and it was a great target gun and I used it to hunt as well. If you are not in great shape I would say either, get in shape, or take a lighter gun. Great round at distance but if you are not familiar with shooting magnum caliber rifles, try it before you buy it. If you are recoil sensitive then shoot a .308, just dont take super long shots on big game with it unless you are VERY skilled and certain of your shot placement. Know your dope.

I love 300WM. I've taken Elk, Sheep and a number of African animals with it. You could argue that there are magnum cartridges that do this or that better, but a big point in 300WM's favor is that you can find it almost anywhere you go, and if you hunt out of state much that can be a big deal.

6.5CM and 300WM are my favorite hunting rounds, with those two I feel I've got the range covered from Pronghorn to Brown Bear.

The Sendero is a great gun, IIRC correctly the Israelis have a few in service as sniper platforms.

I took my last elk with a Proof Research 300WM carbon fiber rifle that weighed under 10 lbs scoped -- it had a Vais muzzle brake and recoil was no big deal -- I think a muzzle brake and not allowing the rifle to free-recoil can do a lot.

Sendero is a GREAT gun. I bought it from the Scouts sniper platoon leader when I first got to Ft Bragg and that gun shot 5 rds into a copenhagen lid at 550yds...ten rds.....dusted off a skunk on the run at 300 with it. Big bang but a solid half minute gun.

I do not think the .300 wm beats you up too bad. But it lets you know it is there, and if you are recoil sensitive, then it may be a bit much. I will say benching a light weight 30-06 will tenderize your shoulder for sure. BUT shooting it offhand is actually nice.
Benching an 1894 lever gun in 44mag will knock you around, and by knock you around I mean it beats the crap out of you. but again, offhand MAN they are nice to shoot.

My Sendero is bit heavier than a pencil barrel. but fits the bill for both with hand loading.
If you are hunting from the hood of a truck your rifle can be heavy.
If your "target shooting" consists of hitting a steel plate a few times at distance you can use a hunting rifle.

The Sendero is an interesting middle ground but it's 8.5lbs with a fluted barrel. No serious target rifle (ie built to fit into a rule set) has a fluted barrel, no serious woods walker is carrying an 8.5lb gun into the mountains. If you are hunting on foot or actually target shooting then you different rifles.

My Sendero was not a fluted barrel and I guess the weight of the rifle a person is willing or able to take into the woods depends on their physical ability and training, when you lug heavy rucks, sniper rifles, and radio equipment, etc for days or weeks......a canteen a little food, and an 8.5lb rifle over 10-15 miles in a day is not going to be a big deal.

It is not the choice everyone would make but some do it pretty well.

I wouldn't compare my experience to serving but I used to haul 75lb packs up fourteeners so that campers didn't have to carry jack. I LOVE going light now, my back and my knees love me going light.

I'll spend twice the money to have a target rifle and a 4.5lb hunting rifle every day of the week. But also I need my target rifle to be a capable palma rifle so yeah, I'm likely not the target audience for a crossover gun.

                        different strokes and all.
