Name this rifle...?

Posting this for a friend of mine. It was given to him by his father before he passed. Not sure what it is, no markings or anything. Just a serial number. He wanted to get it checked out and possibly fixed. The bolt won't seat all the way forward into battery unless you push the back end of the bolt in while pushing forward/pulling down on the lever.

You have just described the NORMAL operation of a cock-on-close action.
It does not sound like anything is wrong with your friend's Arisaka.
Have someone check the headspace and it's probably fine.
He just needs to learn how to operate the gun.
It's not like a modern gun which cocks-on-opening.

ie: they didn't ruin the action by drilling for scope mounts
they can be a lot of fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate
you should look up the serial number etc

definitely some type of heavily modified Arisaka from the looks of the safety knob.

and since it has no markings be careful with your caliber selection.

many were re chambered for other calibers than the original Japanese round.


and FYI I believe sarah is a name of Hebrew descent meaning princess...

and I could be misinterpreting what you're saying but I think when you're saying back end of the bolt you are referring to the safety knob which is twisted, clockwise and counterclockwise to operate (or at least that's what I believe.)

but I must confess I am NOT an expert or even close to Arisaka rifles or their safeties.

I think this YouTube video made by a young man might explain better what I think you're ask me about when you state "pushing the back of the bolt" and I say it's just the safety.
