If you are considering the 783 then I would spend the extra $$ and get a 700 ADL. Much better rifle and still affordable.

Come on folks, you get what you pay for. The triggers are good on the Svages and Rugers, but the rest of the guns are not made to last and are cheaply machined. Look for an older M700, or M77/M70 in the caliber of choice and enjoy a gun that should last your lifetime. A hundred dollars or so more is not much more when you consider how long you will own it.

^ this! I started with budget rifle. I went with Ruger Scout rifle, budget scope, and plinking ammo. Kept shooting it and wanted a rifle that could do sub moa. Well bought a decent rifle, good scope, and match ammo. It's not a budget rifle anymore.

i perfer the new savage acis as well as the ruger american rifle. the new remmingtons in that price range are just horrible.

I went the Remington 700 sps route because it is arguably the most prolific easily modified action on the market, and I can start shooting it right away for a very reasonable initial cost. In the end you are buying the action, everything else can be modified (barrel, bolt, stock, trigger, etc.). The SPS tactical's barrel is very nice for the price, a standard heavy barrel contour. It might not be 5R, but then it wouldnt be a budget gun anymore if it were. And if I want a better barrel there are infinite gunsmiths and options available. I dont think any other makers offer a budget minded gun with a heavy barrel which IMO is a must if you dont want to string shots.

+1 on the savage. But for future upgrades the Remington 700 is tough to beat.
