Old Rossi 1892 question

Hi,

A few years ago I bought an unfired Rossi 1892 in .44 mag from another CG'er. Love the gun. Smooth as butter and accurate. Just noticed that the magazine tube is sliding forward and is now pas the end of the barrel.

Simple to fix and I was going to disassemble it anyway to maybe replace the spring anyway.

Went online to look at disassembly videos and just realized the forearm on mine is different than how they are made now. It doesn't have the barrel band that goes around the magazine tube and barrel. Instead, it has a solid steel piece that butts up tight to the walnut forearm and held on with two screws. If I remove the screws, the steel plate comes free but the forearm won't budge. It's a 24" octagon barrel model

Any idea on how to get this darn thing off? Rossi's website doesn't help as all their new guns have the barrel band.

That's a rifle end cap, the carbine has the band. Remove the two screws, I think you have to remove the mag spring and follower. Either way its easy to remove. Once the screws are out the forearm should just slide up and out.

Think I have it figured out. I think I have to drift out the retaining pin in the forward mag tub holder up by end of barrel. This gun gmhas beautiful striped walnut so while it's apart, I'm going to sand and finish the wood.

You have to pull the mag tube out to the front , after all retaining pins and/or fasteners are removed before the for-end and end cap can lift free.
Be careful with whatever exotic rain forest wood they used. I did one several years back that had some natural oils in it that just would not let varnish or oil type finishes dry. Stayed gummy for months.
