Scope bases for Winchester M70 Target model

A few years back I glommed a 1965 Winchester M70 target model with a Hart barrel in 308. It came with a set of RPA "Trakker" sights and Earle scope mounting blocks. I got busy and kinda left the rifle in the back of the closet.

Anyway, I've given up on trying to use the external adjustable scope mounts and started looking for a scope base for a modern scope. As you can see, this M-70 is the target model with the clip guide in the rear receiver bridge. I've not been able to find a one-piece base for this rifle and wondered if anyone knows if anyone makes a one piece base for this rifle. If not, will standard two-piece bases work?

As best I can determine, the front holes are .86" center-to-center. The rear holes, roughly .43" ctc, and the middle holes, 4.22, ctc.

Any help is much appreciated.

That's a old "highpower" rifle.

For the FNH & Mod 70s, the only common maker that does one that I am aware of is Badger. However, like you say, you have an old model, I'd make sure that what you buy fits. Therefore, I'd talk to someone that specializes in these rifles before spending $150 on something that doesn't fit.

The M70 Targets have the same hole spacing as the M70 H&H Magnum push feed actions. That is what you need for a one piece base.
Weaver 46 front and Weaver 47 or 49A rear for two piece bases. Add an "S" prefix to the Weaver #'s for Grand Slam steel bases.

Take a look at EGW (Evolution Gun Works) and they probably have the Picatinny scope mount you want/need

Thanks, Frank. I looked into EGW and they do have a the proper M70 HH one-piece base. The base is a 0 MOA base , however. I'm wondering if I can put a shim under one side to add some elevation to my scope.

The (hopefully...) attached photo is of a 20 MOA one piece base on my pre '64 M70 target rifle.

I have a spare base that is similar, except it does not have the integral Redfield side mount base, allowing you to retain the stock rear sight base, and it is anodized to a dark gray finish. A quick check of the holes shows they match the spacing you measured on your rifle. The base was made by a central California Highpower shooter and rifle smith who stamped his work with a small "0" that has a "J" inside; aka "circle J".

Beat me to it. I was apprenticing with Jack while he was making those. He was quite a guy. I still use his drawings and fixtures to this day.

Like the time they "kicked" a car off onto a siding and it crashed (a little!) and very very expensive brandy ran out of it for the rest of the shift. They quickly ginned up a way to catch it and strained it through loaves of bread. Kept the yard gang happy for a few days!

I was able to buy 4 of Jacks stripper clips.They always work,and Jim O Connell gave me a Jack Davis front sight that Im just waiting to use on a spacegun upper...one day!
