    Magneto Speed Chronograph

    Anyone using one?

    Pro's and Con's?

What is the difference between the V1 - V3?

v1 didn't have all of the spacers nas has the older module(relied on a wheel that was also a button), didn't have as much clearance for brakes.
v2 had a better knob to tighten it down, and the spacers.
v3 has the spacers, a way better display module with buttons, supposedly works better with airguns, has better brake clearance than v1, has an improved buckle, blah blah blah.

Then there's also the sporter(replacement for the v1)
MagnetoSpeed chronographs and shooting accessories have been innovating in the firearms industry since 2012.

I have a v2, it's a bit fiddly to attach it(if you need to swap spacers around for different guns). Obviously you can't use most of them with something like a semiauto pistol(apparently there's some rail adapter now for the v3?), bow and arrow, etc. However, it also means wind isn't going to blow it over, light isn't an issue, random idiot at the range won't shoot it, and so on.

edit: Also keep in mind that since you're mounting it to the barrel, you can end up with a POI shift(shouldn't be ridiculous, but something to be aware of).

I've used the V1 and V2 and love it. It's completely changed the way I do load dev. There's zero hassle setting it up; you don't have to wait for the line to be clear before you go out in front of your firing position to setup a tripod and get it all lined up properly. Just attach it to your muzzle and go.

It does shift your POI but now I just don't worry about velocity until I've zero'd in on a load. I start with the Magnetospeed as I first pressure test a range of charges to see where my limits are and in the process I get a rough idea of velocity. Then I do load dev without the Magnetospeed and once I've zero'd in on a load, I hook it up and chrono 10 rounds to get an accurate velocity. Done.

FYI, I've used the V2 with big bore rifles and suppressors - that's the main advantage over the v1. The v3 is just a natural evolution of the overall system.

Yup...I develop the most accurate load, then I chronograph it. I do not load develop to a specific velocity. I try to choose a charge weight in the middle of an accuracy node and when I nail down the load and the seating depth, bullet, primer, etc, then I chronograph it and it is what it is. My POI is almost all low relative to my zero.

I do, however cheat a bit and when breaking in a barrel, I will load up rounds in 0.5gr increments and with the bullet I want to shoot and run my Magneto right away. This gives me an initial idea of what speed range I might be after I am done. So, I get a general idea of what my speed range will be, I sight in my rifle to "close enough", and I get the first few rounds through the barrel to foul it up and smooth out the barrel and get it broken in. 3 birds with 1 stone.

Funny, I was at the range this afternoon and was next to a guy using a standard chronograph and he set it up during a cease fire period. He had the fins and tripod and had to make sure it was lined up to his target. I did set my Magneto up during a live fire period, so no need to wait to go downrange, I brought the whole thing in my backpack, and it gives me muzzle velocities, not velocities 7-15ft out.

You can predict your best load by watching your velocity shrink as you test.
The problem is by hanging any amount of weight off the end of a barrel it acts like a tuner.

I'll recommend the Magneto Speed over ANY chronograph on the market. Well, maybe not the LabRadar but only a few people have used them. It is the most effective and accurate way to obtain projectile velocities. I've had the V1.0 the first week they came out and have no reason to upgrade. It just works. They do change barrel harmonics but I (and anyone else) should not be trying to shoot groups with a Magneto Speed installed. When I do load development I already know what loads generally work and what speeds they will be around just by doing research or talking to people. Once I have a load that bug holes at 100 and 200 yards I'll chrono it and input the velocity into my Kestrel. Done deal.

I just started using the Sporter model today. So easy to use. So what kind of ES and SD should I expect? Are big variations a sign of inconsistent hand loads from shot to shot?

I too have a sporter. It's at a good price point and beats any optical chrono. I tend to write down my numbers and do my own math. It's not that hard.

As for load development wouldn't lowest extreme spread equate to most repeatable load?
Once you get that then adjust scope for poi without the muzzle attachment. Is there evidence that this isn't true? I wonder if it's the combination of barrel whip with velocity spread or decouple the two at first.

You can watch your incremental charge increase and watch your velocity at the same time.
If you are outside of a node 1 grain of powder might increase velocity by 125 fps while if your inside of a node it might equal 40 fps for the same single grain.
An extreme spread of zero doesn't guarantee you of your best groups and this can be found in Harold Vaughn's book Rifle Accuracy Facts.

I see the v3 is "rail adapter compatible". Would mounting to a free float rail negate the POI issues? Has anyone found a way to mount the sporter version to a free float rail?

Assuming you have a free float rail that runs to almost the muzzle, maybe... but it's more for use on shorter builds where you won't be giving a crap(or on a semiauto pistol, since you can't wrap the mounting strap around the slide and expect it to work).

That looks like something out of the Gears of War game series.

It's better than trying to aim through two uprights, or having to deal with a finicky IR setup.

I have the V3 and it works great! I got it to chrono indoors with ease.
I also have the XFR dongle to quickly transfer shot strings to mobile devices. Syncing to android devices is a little finicky but it works.
