    Hey Remington Gang!

    Hi Gang,

I was browsing my Brownells catalog, and found a part: Remington 700 Firing pin Assembly - #767-000-916AH. Its a short action firing pin replacement assembly. It cost: $54.24

Description is: " Factory-original, firing pin assembly eliminates the ISS bolt lock system on your current production, Remington 700 rifle to make it like they used to be. "

Please educate me on what the ISS is, why is it undesirable, and why it is advantageous to buy this replacement bolt.

    Thanks a lot

It is this thing. I believe they stopped putting it on rifles in ~2005.

        AKA: Impossibly Stupid Safety

Better than the Brownell's part, get yourself a Light Steel firing pin assembly from Greg Tannel. Send him your bolt and he can bush the firing pin hole as well, no more primer issues.

Do you have an issue with your existing firing pin? If not, I'd leave it alone.

You could still have the J-Lock firing pin assembly and not the J-Lock itself depending on when this rifle was manufactured. When Remington discontinued that stupid lock they had lots of parts left over. The simply skipped the machine step for the lock but gave you all the crap components. The biggest problem was the tapered firing pin that didn't fully support the spring which would bunch up when the rifle was cocked.

If the exposed part of the shroud is approx. 1.34" long you have a J-Lock firing pin assembly. Non J-Lock shrouds are approx. 1.07" long

^^^ This is what I do, have done and will continue to do. If you want to go further, but not all the way, send him the barreled action and have him double sleeve the bolt and ream the raceway. At a minimum, check out the video of adding the firing pin bushing (bottom link).
