There's no standard about what is an 'Obrez' but many of the pictures I've seen are cut down so much there's not much to hold on to. Some even have pistol grips added and I'd bet they are not very secure. The SBR size just gives you more to hold on to. The added weight probably helps a bit too.

You can still have a bunch of wood to hold onto(heh) if you make an obrez pistol without having to deal with SBRs in CA. It's like saying this would be better if it were SBR'd instead of being a pistol, while still having the stock cut down the same way:
Yes, that's a pistol. Plenty to grab onto and has sights.
Now sure, cutting up receivers and welding them back together is probably more difficult for most people than filing a form 1 and paying $200, but practically speaking the end product with the stock cut down has the same functionality(and actually avoiding form 5320).Last edited by Merc1138; 07-31-2015, 1:57 PM.Comment

The thing about a mare's leg is, every time I see one I think it would be more useful as an SBR with a full size buttstock; but with a lever action you lose magazine capacity. The $200 transfer tax is a bit of a put off too. I still talk to dealers about SBRs when they have something cool for sale. I haven't been able to get myself to put out the bucks for one ... yet.
I know you live in California with its regulations-from-another-planet so I realize YMMV

The magazine capacity isn't relevant, my point was simply responding to your comment about not having much to hold onto, as if that made a difference when making a pistol out of a mosin nagant, considering the guy in the video the OP linked cut the stock down the same way.Comment
