Ruger RPR Caliber Swap, How Diffucult??

I just placed a deposit on a 6.5Creedmoor, I cant wait!

I have seen the exploded/schematic diagram of the Ruger RPR and the barrel seems like it could be replaced by a custom barrel made by a competent gunsmith out of an off the shelf barrel blank with the correct tools and a lathe.

Since all you need to remove the barrel is an AR wrench here is a thought...

Have a barrel made in a different caliber and match it with its designated scope on set of good quality quick disconnect rings.

You could potentially have a rifle set up that can shoot several calibers with a barrel and scope swap.

All new calibers would have to be from the same parent case (.308, 30-06, .270Win, .243. etc...) so the same bolt could be used on all additional barrels.

Could/would this work?

I could be wrong, but wouldn't it just be easier to just get normal rings then rezero it every time you swap the barrel? Because even if you could get the scope to return to zero every time, the barrel may not?

I'm thinking it may not return to perfect zero because from what I've read in the RPR thread it headspaces off of a go/nogo gauges, and AR15 barrels said its hard to get the nut to stop from rotating. Again, this is just what I got from reading. Also, instead of having to invest in a lot of mediocre scopes, you get just one nice for the same money spent.

Also, I'm not sure if a 30-06 would work in the RPR. I thought that it was a short action since 6.5, .243, and .308 are short action cartridges

You are correct.

The scope may return to zero but depending on the torque of the barrel the barrel zero may/will change.

...and yes, the 30-06 will not work in a short action!

I'm thinking about buying one chambered for the 308 Winchester.

If the Ruger Precision Rifle is the smash hit I expect it to be, I think plenty of custom barrels will be made for it.

It seems like it would be easier to change barrels, but it would be no good for barrels swaps since it's harder to get a perfect return to headspace with a barrel nut design. It's a lot easier to swap barrels on a barrel that just screws into to torque so it returns the same position. This would be a rifle like an R700 or other common types.
