Scope mount and rings for 60's 760 gamemaster?

So I inherited this from my grandfather. It shoots true until the barrel is hot, which I hear is common. Looking to add some range to it and use it for deer and hog hunts. Anyone have a suggestion for a solid mount / ring / scope set up that won't break the bank? I know everyone will say that you get the glass you pay for, but someone has to have some decent suggestions that won't run me the price of another premium rifle. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you!

I have one in 30-06. I put leupold mount/rings(low) on it with a Leupold 3X9X40 Duplex reticle scope on it in 1970. Zeroed it in and never have had to redo it.
The Leupold VX2 scopes are about $299 or a VX1 for $200 and you are good to go.

Just get some Weaver mounts and rings then look on ebay and see if you can find a Bushnell Scope Chief or Weaver K4. Both are good scopes made around the same time rifle was.

A vintage scope would be nice on that gamemaster. What caliber? You might find a vintage scope at Bermans on 6th street in san bernardino...they get some nice, used vintage hunting guns now and then.

My 760 has a VariX-II scope that I bought new in 1970. I am pretty sure they were made in 1960-1969 also. If not it is so close and a better scope than the Weaver or Bushnell---I have owned those also as well as bushnell banner, sportsman and some other weavers.
OP just get the Leupold VX2 new or go to ebay etc and get a used VarriX-II probably for about the same price (or more) and you will not have as good of glass as the VX2. I have about 15 old VarriX-II scopes, a couple old VarriX-III scopes, 3 of the new VX2 and 4 of the new VX3 scopes. The newer scopes have better glass.
OP not sure where you are located but if you are near me you can try any of my rifles. I also can improve your trigger easy. I have done at least 20 of them since a gunsmith taught me years ago. I can also get you the Leupold VX2 scope for about $250 plus shipping if you want.

I think the Bushnell Scope Chief VI has brighter view than the Leupold VariX II, bought them all new in the 80s.
The made in El Paso Weaver K scopes I have I bought used, they aren't bad, not as bright as others but they're also older scopes.
None are as bright as the new scopes.

So I ended up getting a great deal on a Redfield revolution 4-12x40. Probably keep it at 4, use the higher power at the range for long distance shots. Got some weaver rings that mount right onto the rifle. I'll start taking it to the range here soon . Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

I've heard nothing but good about the new Redfield scopes. Guess they have same glass as Leupold Rifleman & VXI. I have a VXI it's brighter than my old Leupold VariX IIs

I heard nothing but good about them as all. Some people prefered the V-2's but that was a little out of my range, so for now we'll see how it works. But knowing that they are backed by Leopold's customer service and qc definitely made it an easier choice.
