    Opinion wanted

So I decided that my next firearm will be a bolt action .30-06, the question is which make/model do you like, why? I prefer a stainless/wood combo! I currently have a semi-auto for hunting so I am looking for a longer distance target(and occasional critter killin) rifle!

I once pondered over the debate of 9mm vs. .40, then I was introduced to .38 super and 10mm and forgot all about it.

What is your intended purpose? Hunting I presume?

When you say 'and occasional critter killin', do you mean 'I will honestly taking this hunting a few times a year, but I prefer to hunt with my other rifle'? Or do you mean 'I need to justify buying a new rifle to the wife so I'm going to tell her it's for hunting things bigger than I can hunt with my other hunting rifle and for bear protection, but really it's going to be a bench/target gun'?

Savage best out of the box accuracy. Reasonable prices
          Heard good things about Tikka
Heard bad things about new Remington's,and I agree they blow

What's your price-point? they go up from here. i.e Kimber etc

No justification needed, want better distance target in a .30-06 platform!

A Savage pr a Tikka will be a good shooter out of the box. The Tikka has a good trigger and if the Savage has the Accu-trigger, it is good, too. Kimber makes a nice classic rifle, though my varmint model in .22-250 took a while to break in before accuracy settled down. Ruger M-77s are also a good choice, though I have not owned one. If target shooting is the main purpose, I'd avoid the super light versions.

You might want to amend your list of wants to say you are looking for a target rifle in .30-06 instead of a target/hunting rifle or a hunting rifle. It'll make narrowing stuff down easier.

That being said, I'm partial to Tikka but don't know if they offer their target variety in .30-06.

Take a look at the Tikka and Browning. Not "target" rifles, but nice 30-06's that are good at anything.

If you plan on leaving it the way it is with no modifications in the future, go Vanguard.

I'd check out the LGS used racks for older Winchester, Remington, or Ruger Varmint weight rifle.

New is nice, but there are some sweet older tack drivers out there... Might even find a nice rifle/scope already set up.

Vanguard, Tikka, Savage, maybe Marlin would be on my short list
