    Winchester XPR - thoughts?

This will be my first bolt action rifle. I did some research and this was recommended as a decent beginner bolt action rifle. Not too pricey either. I like the Winchester brand myself. I'm considering getting one in .338 Win Mag. Has anyone shot a Winchester XPR? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Did you see Dave Petzal's recent review in F&S magazine? He called the XPR "immaculate", a "very good hunting rifle", and a "terrific value".

Buy what you want. It is your money. If you like Win then buy one or more.

338Win mag as a first rifle is just plain NOT a smart move. I own one and many other mags and non-mags. A 338win mag is a poor choice.1) heavy recoil 2) expensive ammo 3) harder to find ammo or brass if you reload(anyone who knows where there is new brass for sale please let me know)

Do yourself a favor and buy a lessor recoiling chambering which the ammo is easier to find and cheaper. You will be inclined to shoot it more.

Save the 338 until you are ready to hunt Africa or moose or elk or large bears etc. That said I have shot ground squirrels with mine. BUT only one or two shots during a shoot.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Can't tell you about the XPR, but the 338 Win is an excellent cartridge. If you get one you'll definitely want to get into reloading.

Yeah, burning 67gr of powder and generating over 30lbs of recoil (twice that of a .308), you might rethink your caliber choice unless you're planning on hunting Bears in AK.
