    Scope for M1903 ?

    Hi,

I am wandering what type and strength of scope to get for a sporterized Springfield M1903.

Not planning on taking it hunting.
Target and silhouette up to 600 yards only.

Should I go with a fixed strength scope if so what magnification 6x , 8x 10, 12x or more?

Or a Variable magnification, if so what range?

Consider budget not a primary concern. Looking for quality glass not options and features...

    Thanks,

    Roger

In the fixed power scopes I am looking at:

    Leupold FX3 12X
    US Optics ST-10

Any other suggestions for fixed power scopes?

      On a 1903 I'd put an old Weaver K4, K6 or V9

Are these still made new or do I have to find them used?
The Weaver website doesn't offer much choice

The field is wide open for a target rifle. A 4-12X40 or 6-18X40 would be fine even a 3-9X40 would work. More power would also work. A fixed 10X would work.

Quality would be a Leupold or Nightforce.
Junk would be a BEC, BSA(back slowly away), Trasco and such.
Middle of the road Weaver, Burris, Bushnell and such.
Slightly less that middle of the road would be Redfield(actually a sleeper on quality),Simmons and such.
Then you have the Vortex and a couple of other brands that have their dedicated followers.

It is your money so get what YOU like not what others tell you that "you must have" or "the only scope choice" for yourself and YOUR rifle. If you can try out different brands before buying.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

                  Thanks for all the feedback.

No one seems to bring up a variable scope. So I guess a single power would be the best solution?

From what I read on the web is that 8 or 10X power should be the right choice.

I see that that some might think that spending $1200 is way to much for this old rifle. But I rather have good optics to begin with. If I cant properly see the target the rest is basically a non starter.

As for experience I do have some military experience and last week I got to shoot some one else his rifle at 600 yards. Ended up with a 2" group while taking wind and mirage in consideration ;-)

I originally bought a Replica Unertl but have since replaced it with a Unertl 10X, better quality glass

Bushnell makes an excellent budget target knob scope in 10X (elite 3200 target 10 x) in mildot/MOA or Mil/Mil. Most of the milsurp competitors here at Sacramento valley shoot this scope (restricted to 10 X), Bushnell also makes a variable of this 5-15x 1" and is also an excelent scope.

Other choice's can be the 30mm SWFA target knob (90 MOA) 10x/16x/20X SS scopes $350.
