URSA SoCal Shoot Schedule for Q3'15

URSA (the Unlimited Range Shooters Association) has scheduled the following events for the greater Barstow, CA area, roughly a three hour drive from the greater LA and Vegas areas.

    Shoot - Sunday, Jul 19, 2015 (SoCal 3)
    Shoot - Sunday, Aug 16, 2015 (SoCal 4)
    Shoot - Sunday, Sep 20, 2015 (SoCal 5)

That is, monthly, 3rd Sunday going forward.

We'll be shooting at approximately 2085 yards and approximately 2640 yards (assuming we have shooters capable of advancing to that second distance). We'll then reposition targets to shoot at 3000+ yards and possibly further, depending on shooter success in prior stages. This venue will support 4000 yards and well beyond, so plenty of upside.

Access is "4WD highly recommended" due to sandy conditions. [We have already had to tow a couple of shooters, one a large 2WD dualie.] Gas/facilities and food are nearby but there are no facilities, water, or shade at the actual shooting location. Use sunscreen and canopies or suffer. Temps in the high 90s/lower 100s are expected as the day progresses, overnight temps in the low to mid-70s. Based on prior shoots, we should be done shooting by 1000 hours (10 AM).

We will set up the day before so that shooting can commence promptly at 0600 (6 AM). All shooters are expected to arrive in sufficient time to get fully offloaded and set up by 0550 when we will have a brief shooters meeting. If you have a stable shooting bench, bring it, else you'll be shooting off the ground.

Course of fire will begin with getting on target and qualifying to shoot the formal part of the event. Shooters need to score hits three (3) times out of 10 shots to qualify. Practice and qualifying will run from 1 to 1.5 hours, followed by the formal shoot which will run as long as shooters meet the minimum requirement to advance (4 hits in 10 shots). Following the "shoot" portion of the event we will provide shooters an opportunity to shoot Achievement (classification) targets. We will be using IRIS shot-indicator systems (2). Only shots that turn the lights on count as hits. Nicks and weak rounds which do not turn the lights on count as misses. NOTE: Leave your AP and incendiary ammo at home as they are one of the few things on the hardware side that are strictly prohibited.

ALL shooters and anyone else that will on the line MUST be wearing eye protection (ANSI Z87+ or better with side shields or of a wrap-around design) and hearing protection (Noise Reduction Rating/NRR of 25 or higher, preferably double plugged). Open chamber indicator in place at ALL times when the range is not Hot or, if still Hot, after the shooter has completed firing.

All shooters and spotters, and anyone else that will require access to the firing line, will need to sign the liability release portion of the "Liability Release, Build Sheet, & Results" (form) - http://www.unlimitedrange.org/Liabil...20Rev%20NC.pdf. Shooters also need to complete the Build Sheet section. Please download, print out, and come to the event with the form completed. PLEASE PRINT!

URSA is totally non-commercial and there is NO fee, charge, or any other form of compensation required or accepted. URSA is fully described at www.unlimitedrange.org. Review of the Operations page ("rules") is strongly recommended.

We need 1-2 people (helpers) to help set up the 115# targets the day before each shoot. Helpers need to arrive by 1800 hours (6 PM). During the June shoot folks camped out overnight. Those interested in shooting or helping are asked to contact webmaster@unlimitedrange.org ASAP.

I am planning to go in July, working to make the 3rd Sundays clear for future dates. WEGA isn't hot enough for me in the summer; I need the full Mojave . Seriously, folks, we get going at 6 a.m. to beat the heat which brings wind and high mirage. It won't be chilly, but it won't be horrible.

If I get my rifle in time I will try my best to make it. It's gonna be close, though, and I won't be able to confirm until about a week prior.

Stupid people don't know they are stupid. Because they are stupid. They will follow evil geniuses and do their bidding, because they are stupid.

Really super stupid people look up to, and follow stupid people like they were geniuses, because to them, they are. Unfortunately the reality of it is, that doesn't make stupid people any smarter.

That right there is the root cause to most problems in the world.

If Lynn can get his engine fixed, maybe he can come down and camp. I'll chip in for some of his gas money. I am looking forward to giving him a shooting lesson .

I wonder if Oscar will bring out any toys? (Oscar, hint hint) We are anxious to see your builds.

Lynn has surgery on the 14th and the engine is ready to drop in at 8 am Friday morning. Here is a picture of the problem.
I hope you guys get a bigger crowd and knock lots of paint off that gong. To anyone wanting to shoot unlimited range this is a golden opportunity. It costs nothing and the light array is really a smart idea. You don't need a 50 BMG for 2000 yards but you do need lots of elevation in your scope.
Sorry to hear TheGiff and Postal are not attending as I like to read there posts.

Nope, not at all. Actually, for my taste, a 50 BMG is the wrong flavor. I like speed for distance. Last time, everyone was successful in making at least one hit. Some folks even did this with a 338 Lapua with a barrel that had 3,500 rounds through it and no grooves left on the first inch or so of the barrel and factory ammo. TheGiff made hits with an itty bitty 6 Creedmoor, which I wouldn't have believed had I not witnessed it. If I can find a load in time, I may step down to my small rifle rifle, the LAI.

Regular Lapuas are more than enough for Stage 1. Then, if it isn't too windy (which it shouldn't be with the early start), halfway decent shooters can do it with stuff like 300 WMs, 6.5-284, .243 AI, etc. You just need to be a good shooter that can load accurate ammo. The accurate shooters that know how to read wind and pick a good load will do fine.

It's a good challenge for folks that call themselves "precision" shooters. Anyone can hit a target at 600-1,000 yards as you can get away with quite a bit of slop, but at 2,100 yards the potential flaws in your shooting and ammo are exposed. In particular, if you have a large ES, you will have difficulty as you won't be able to predict your elevation. If you have a really tight ES and can shoot, you just need to focus on wind. TheGiff is a precision shooter, and he really showed everyone how it is done at the last match with his 6 Creedmoor. He obviously knows how to load ammo and shoot.

Guys here is your chance to do some unlimited range shooting using state of the art gongs and light arrays and its free yes FREE!!!
My buddy Tim Sellars just came in second place at the King of Two Miles match in Raton New Mexico and he was shooting a 300 Win Mag and 220 grain Sierra bullets against a lot of 50 BMG shooters.
The main thing you need is enough elevation and you can do it.
Around 24 mils with a 338 Lapua and around 35 with the small cartridges.

                        JMP
Engine is running better than ever but the match is 5 days after my surgery so I don't know if I can make it. If I am feeling well look for the ugliest red truck you have ever seen.

Read post 10, that's exactly what I said. Velocity and accuracy are king. There are lots of folks that can make it with what they have. There's no need to build a super-gun to get there. You cannot buy performance at these ranges.

Has anyone yet tried a 243 Improved or 6mm-06? I'll bet that would get some rings on Stage 1.

For those that are concerned about the temps for the July 19th shoot, I just checked the forecast and it is expected to run from 72-80 during the time we will be shooting (6-9 or 10). Later in the day in the high 90's. If your AC (vehicle air conditioning) and vehicle (sand worthiness) are up to it, and you are interested in venturing into 2000 yards plus at events held monthly, please consider joining us to shoot. There are no out-of-pocket costs beyond your travel and from-home ammo.

If you live in CA and can't take the heat, you should be ashamed of yourself. I shot most the day in the Palm Springs area last Saturday with no canopy or sun screen. It wasn't bad at all, but I did get a bit fatigued by afternoon as I should have had more water in the morning and gotten more sleep the night before.

As far as sand goes, don't let Oscar scare you. Clearance isn't a problem so if you have a 4x4, AWD, or light front wheel drive car, there should be no issues. I'd have no apprehension taking my Honda Civic to the location. Sand is the only issue. Folks, when you drive through a spot of sand, you DO NOT want to slow down an check it out. Keep your speed and glide through it. When folks with the RWD get stuck, it's usually because they were actually going too slow or stopped and tried to creep over it.

I am set up with a generator and portable A/C unit to keep a big tent like a crisper, but it's just too much hassle to haul around since we'll just be there in mild heat.
