Scope reccomendations for Weatherby 3006

So I'm in my 10 day wait on a Weatherby 3006 and it needs a scope.

The rifle will be used almost exclusivly for range fun and the rare hunting trip.

What scopes does the group reccomend?

What ranges will you be shooting at?

I have a Viper HS LR 4-16x50 that I like. The non FFP is cheap for how nice it is. I also have a Bushnell Elite 10x that is super cheap, but you have to want/like fixed power scopes (I do).

24", standard contour, gen-2 Vanguard in .30-06?

The best hunting scope may not necessarily be the best target scope. With the type of hunting considered, a good target-shooting scope may be easier to adapt to hunting than the other way around. Of course, you can probably do both with both. You could find a middle ground somewhere, depending on your budget and wants.

What mounting set-up? Two piece with standard rings? One piece with standard rings? Picatinny rail? Talley LW's or DNZ?

The mount may limit you somewhat depending on where you position your head on the stock. I like compact scopes, but also simplified mount sets (like the DNZ) that keep me from moving the small scope for my preferred eye-relief. For reference: a DNZ Gamemaster has its rings spaced the entire length of a Leupold VX-2, 2-7x. I.e: no forward/back movement able when mounting. Your style or position may be totally different. A picatinny rail and rings, or extended rings will solve this. I don't prefer those mounts.

As far as the scope choice: almost anything can be adapted if you like the optic. Your standard to measure could be a Leupold VX-2 or VX-3 in a mid-range magnification, or anything in that price range.

For a target scope, you may want to consider turret type (markings for adjustment, accuracy, repeatability) and reticle available. Shooting targets may be benefitted by a finer crosshair or reticle.

Scope recommendations are like caliber recommendations. You're going to get a different answer from just about everyone unless you set some parameters for the use and budget.

I have the exact same gun assuming VS2. I did Talley Low rings and Luepold VX2 3x9x40. Works well. But the barrel heats up very fast so the accuracy goes away quick.

^^^^ Excellent combo for hunting. That is the scope I have(older model mostly) I have on most of my hunting rifles. The 3.5X10X40 Duplex reticle is on a few also.

For target shooting the choices are wide open. If you want use a ?X32 power scope with the most cluttered reticle you want in any brand. Heck if it breaks it is only a range trip.

Nikon monarch 2.5-10x42. bdc.
will give you up close options in brush or open country as far as you're comfortable.. best of both of worlds.

Zeiss Conquest in 3-9x40. They're $329 at EuroOptic.com. During the day, clearest "mere mortal" priced scope I've looked through.

Or, a Leupold VX-1 or Redfield Revolution, also in 3-9x40. Either is $199 virtually anywhere (lower if you shop around). The reticle's a little thinner than the Conquest, but they seem just a bit brighter at night. If you do Redfield, consider the Accu-Range reticle since range target shooting's the main thing on the menu here. Gives you some nice hold-over points for various distances.

Really, it's hard to go wrong with either one.

Another consideration - is your new rifle a matte or shiny blued finish?
Most of my "classic" wood & blued metal-work rifles have gloss scopes mounted. Many of the current manufacturers do not offer a gloss scope version.
As most stated - for a hunting/field rifle, a variable 3-9 or 4-12 will be more than sufficient. Don't go cheap on the glass - a good scope will last you a lifetime.

Do you have a budget? And did you say what distances you will be shooting? For me, if it's a gun I plan on keeping for a long time, my first choice is Leupold. The 30-06 is so versatile, you can put just about any scope you want on it depending on your needs.
