Building A New 700 Remington

Shooters are constantly asking about which 700 to buy and about which model.
Once they get it the first thing they do is start swapping out parts.
Here is a different approach you can take.

Buy a short or long action ready to go from one of the big supply houses for less than $500.
Buy a take off barrel off of E-Bay in the caliber of your choice for $50 and make sure it comes with the recoil lug.
Pick out the chassis or stock of your choice which will run $50 to $2000
Have the barrel installed by any gunsmith done and done.
I would never pay more than $500 for any 700 Remington unless you never plan on ever changing anything.

Usually about $3,000 is about right for an R700 unless you are okay with crap and cheap Chinese components. Then, you generally want to start at $1,000 price range in scopes. So, about $4,000 is the minimum budget for a completed scoped bolt action rifle. Then, you will have something you can be happy with and it will last. If you pay much less, you'll end up paying a lot more in the long run if you are serious.

I think it's worth it starting with quality. I disagree with Lynn that $50 for a barrel and recoil lug is a good choice. I'd get a Bartlein barrel, which is going to a few hundred for the blank and a few hundred for the gunsmith work.

I only own three rifles with factory barrels. Winchester 52 D an Anschutz 22 Hornet and a Feinwerkbau .177 pellet gun.
My intent since we see so many 700 threads was to let people know you can mix and match parts and save a ton of money.
I cringe a lot here.

I got my 700 Classic in .30/06 for Fathers Day 1985 and except for changing scopes, it is mint from the factory. Very successful on elk, deer and wild boar.

My guess is that just about any Rem 700 will outshoot its owner (mine sure does). That includes the $400 ADL's.

To those contemplating what's being suggested here: try shooting it first and see how you like it. You may be pleased with it as is.

What I am suggesting here is people don't need to pay $800 for a donor rifle. Many here are paying over $1000 then swapping out the trigger and the stock. For that kind of money they can buy an action and have a good barrel put on it for the same cost.
If your going to change the stock and trigger anyway why pay for the factory junk.
E-Bay has hundreds of barrels for $50 each so if you buy a 308 you might as well get a 243 257 or 7mm-08 as well.
I have a long action all trued up with two bolts. One week its my 6mm-06 deer rifle and the next week its a 300 RUM gong hammer.
