    Help choosing 700 s/a stock

    Hey All,

I'm looking for a stock for my 700 SPS in .308. The factory hogue junk has to go.

Currently I'm leaning towards the AWT chassis because it's average weight, adjustable, AI mags (+ comes with 10rd'er), acceptable price (for fully adjustable stocks), and good size/shape.

The turn offs for me are:
I'm concerned an aluminum stock will get very hot sitting in the sun.
    Limited to using 10rd+ mags.

I've looked at traditional stock on stockystocks.com but the huge variety of grip angles, adjustment options per stock (or none at all), and features have overloaded me.

    What's your suggestion?

I had a McRee chassis on my old 700 and don't recall any problems with it getting hot especially compared to the barrel. Obviously it is going to heat up faster than a composite/polymer/kevlar stock but if this was a common problem there would be more documented cases of complaints. The coating on the stocks play a significant role in determining how they absorb heat. Also consider that while shooting, your points of contact on the rifle (grip, butt pad, cheek riser) are all not going to be metal.

McRee does make 5 round AI style magazines which should be compatible if you are worried about the large 10 rounders.

As far as traditional stocks go, I like hunter/sporter style grips when shooting prone (I'm not a bench guy). I don't like the ergonomics of more vertical and especially pistol grips because they torque my wrist. There are plenty of people on this forum who feel otherwise so its best to try some out before making a purchase to see what fits you best. I do like LOP adjustability on carbines which I shoot standing, but have never had a problem with non-adjustable ones on bolt guns (I'm 6' 1" and 165lbs). That being said, it never hurts to have the option.

      Aluminum chassis DO get hot/cold.

If I went with a chassis system McRees would be at the top of my list, I believe it's the best value for the quality you get.

For traditional rifle stocks, I really like the Remington 5R stock. I dropped a AAC-SD 20" in the 5R stock and it makes a nice compact package compaired to a chassis system.

As long as you get a quality product and stay free floated, you will accurate down range.

I really like the thumb hole, but I find myself not using it all the time since it's faster to get shots off without wrapping your thumb.

Chassis Id go Mcree or XLR. The HS Precision stocks are pretty nice too.

Manners T4a with PTG stealth bottom metal.
Get it with regular pillars and bed it yourself.
Stay away from the mini-chassis or any of the other "no bedding required" chassis systems.

If I were you I would take a hard look at the XLR Element Chassis. A good buddy of mine has 2 of them. I have shot them and they are really nice! Lots of options as well. Plus or minus 600.00.
