    lever action ITCH...help

    Hello to all

just got an itch for a new lever action , been looking at the Cimarron Texas brush popper in 357mag. straight grip , short stroke.

a bit costly ...but it sure does look sweet !

any shooters out there have one ? any feedback info (talk me into/out of)
I've had a Marlin 1894 , sweet shooter but just not the looker that the Brush popper is....and I really like the old time look.

help me scratch that darn itch with some info for now....please.

That is a fine choice. Just dont get sucked into the current Remlin/Rossi/Henry cult. Quality cost money these days.

Can't agree on the Rossi; it's been a fine performer for me, so I'd recommend considering one. Here's mine, in .357M. Top rifle, action open.

Another option, if the OP would consider going .44 caliber, would be a Ruger 96/44. They shoot .44 Special just as well as they shoot .44 Magnum. I reminded myself of that fact just a few days ago. :-) They're good looking and take the Ruger integral-mount rings like on a Mini-14. I find that medium rings work great for a typical 3-9x40 scope. The 96/44 also has a fairly short, and exceptionally smooth, stroke.

Here's what one looks like. It's the middle rifle. I took the rings off of a Mini-14 from an owner who didn't want 'em and gave 'em to me for free, hence the color difference.

It's a looker for sure. But if you plan on taking it afield, keep in mind it's a couple pounds more than a similarly spec'd Rossi.

Fine performer and low quality can sometimes be found in the same thing. There are many Rossi users that ended up frustrated with their purchase, myself included.

I prefer 30-30 and up for lever actions personally.
But boy do they scratch that itch.

Henry is quality, just heavy quality..

OP, have you looked at the Uberti guns, same gun for a few hundred less..

For the price, I think the Rossis are good shooters. I've got a 24" octagonal barreled one in .44 mag. It is a fantastic shooter. A buddy has the same one in .357 and there is not much better for popping citrus.

Rossi fixed one of mine, of course it took a few months. I fear the 44 carbine might be a loss though

I have ready the newer guns are better, I have no experience with them..

The cast zinc alloy receivers turned me away from the Henry. Quality is older Marlins, Winchesters, Uberti, way old Henrys etc.

Mine is indeed a newer one. I've read the same things you have about older vs. more recent, so if the OP does go Rossi, newer is better.

Also recently got my hands on a .44 carbine, also stainless. It seems to be a newer one as well, and that has had its trigger smoothed out a bit by the previous owner. It's a nice shooter and dead-nuts reliable.

It might be possible to convince Taurus/Rossi that you've got a lemon. Maybe they'll just send you out a new one, like Ruger and S&W are at times known to do. Worth a shot, anyway (so to speak).

I am quite fond of my .44 Winchester 1892 short rifle made in Japan

Yes they have extra safety features. They're strong, awesome rifles. Lightweight, hold 10+1 and are 6 pounds or so empty.

44 mag loaded right can be more powerful than 30-30 out to around 100 yards. 30-30 shoots flatter sure, but at what distances are you using your lever gun?
                          Past 75ish I'm using a scoped Rem 700 anyways.

My 1982 vintage .357 Rossi has been a great performer. It broke the firing pin after 30+ years of use most likely from dry firing on my part. Old Rossi is fine expect that a few parts have changed over the years between old and new such as the firing pin.

Yeah.. I know the itch... and it never seems to quite go away.... mine is of the Winchester model 94 and 1894 variety. Mine are mostly 30 WCF (30-30) and .44 magnum.
