Basically you toss everything but the action then rework it. Also save the trigger guard/floorplate metal.

That's all fine and dandy except that none of that applies to a 700p.
The 700p comes out of the box with a good stock and a good trigger that can be turned into a great trigger with a $3 replacement spring.
You seem to have confused the 700p with the low-line SPS series...

Even then, most of the SPS standard rifles out shoot 90% of the guys shooting them. Aside from the stock that needed replacing, my rifle still out shoots me.

Too many guys build up these $3k rifles and MUST have the best of the best, then that rifle doesn't see a single round down range. Or they sit next to you on the firing line and shoot a 4" group at 50 yards and are shooting steel case surplus bargin ammo.

There is a "700 is junk" trend going on, it does have some ground being some guys do over sell the 700. But slowly but surely the new cool thing is to push everything that's not a 700. Nothing wrong with that but now the 700 is turning into BCM, just being hated because of the name and the fact it was/is successful. And how every PSA guy makes it a mission to make sure to trash anything BCM to push their new found favorite.

I just watched a interview with a accomplished long range shooter who traveled to some of the best shooting clubs and rifle making companies gobally. One of his lines were

"It will always come down to the shooter, Day in day out we have guys with $300 rifles, out shooting guys with $5k+ rifles. In today's market the shooter is the biggest short fall of rifle systems seen at matches today. A great marksmen will always out shoot a bad shooter."

        This cannot be overstated.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

          good points CK 32

we should also do a better job making sure any "faults" or "cons" to a particular rifle are understood within correct context.

I always want a rifle to shoot better than I can. If it doesn't, I'll send it down the road as it is not a challenge to improve my shooting. The OP should buy the one he likes best, that feels best and has the best reputation for accuracy out of the box. He asked for advice on what to buy....

You said it, CK. My bone-stock ADL Varmint 308 outshoots me pretty handily. The only addition was a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40.

Come to think of it, that's true of all my recent-vintage bolt rifles. That's a good "problem" to have. :-)

There will always be cheap-*** people that think their cheap stuff is as good or better than the "industry standard".
People who can afford quality will figure it out on their own.

My SPS was theeee most inconsistent POS I have ever shot. Here are 100 yard targets to prove it.

My 700P is sort of the same........here is a 200 yard target.

I like the Vanguard. I also had a Win 70 which I liked very much. Things have probably changed since the 1970-1990s but Model 70 was a standard for all hunting.

The OP doesn't speak of CMP and no one has brought it up so I am asking if this is because rifles through CMP are thought of as occasional use. Or maybe it's because mil surp is too heavy compared to synthetic everything these days???

Nice shooting man! Best I've ever done was about .62" @ 100 (more luck than anything). But I can't shoot for crap. Anything past 100 I just shoot steel so I can't exactly quote on that.

Average around 1 - 1.2" @ 100. Replaced the stock with a nice solid B&C thinking it would shrink my groups. But I still shoot 1" groups, proving I just suck lol

A lot of it was load development and finding the sweet spot. The COAL was 2.920. The SPS was a terrible shooter with FGMM. 1-1.5MOA at best. However once I pulled the bullets out to 2.920 for that rifle it shot well.

For the OP, IMO the Tikka Lite rifle would serve your purpose well
