    Barrel break in

Yes, another dreaded barrel break in question. But this time it's on equipment.

A local shop suggested Dewey rods with a jag to scrub and a boreguide to do this. He suggested using Sweets. I have a can of Gunslick foaming bore cleaner that works for me, without ammonia.

Question is, can I use my OTIS cable system to do the same job? I was told I wouldn't be able to " scrub" without a rod.. Maybe he just wanted to sell me his stuff?

Clean it well before you shoot. Go sight it in with 20 rounds. Clean it well again. Enjoy.

Clean it first, clean it again when your groups change.

what do they mean by "scrub"? we can all assume what it means, how we would do it, but the only answer that matters is what they meant otherwise we really can't advice if their suggestion has merit or if it would do damage.

regardless of what you think is or is not the benefit of barrel break, it is inarguable that some suggested procedures WILL do more harm than good.

When he said " Scrub" I think he meant to get any copper fouling out with a jag. Then continue shooting 1 round, run a patch to look for any blue or fouling than proceed with a jag to clean out.

There are so many variables in this topic it's almost pointless. Some barrels shoot better spotless, some copper filled, some shoot best somewhere in between. Just go shoot the rifle and find out. I used to be a cleaning nazi (I'm brainwashed from being a Marine) but slowly I started leaving my barrels dirty and guess what, my rifles held zero and my groups stayed tight. I say just just go shoot the thing and see what happen.

                      proper break in

Is achieved with three cleanings every five shots for the first 100 shots, then two cleanings every ten shots for the next 200 shots

                        1) Before firing rifle for first time - clean bore and chamber thoroughly
                        2) Fire 1st shot
                        3) Clean with mild powder solvent 10 strokes
                        4) Dry bore with patches until clean (usually 3)

Repeat process for each shot for the first 5 rounds
After the first 5 rounds, repeat cleaning process every 5 rounds for the next 25 rounds.

There is no data to support shooting through a dirty barrel is better than a clean barrel. But, I'm not a clean freak, start clean and go shoot some rounds.

A bore guide is used to protect the bore from being damaged by the cleaning rod.
There are several types of jags. The first type has a slot to hold the patch the second type has a point to spear the patch and the third type has a knurled shank to wrap the patch onto.
To scrub the bore with a jag and not a brush you need the jag that the patch wraps around and some bore pastepaste of which there are many choices.
If dirty bores shot good the military in every country in the world wouldn't clean them. The fact that they do should tell you that despite what you might read here clean barrelsbarrels do indeed shoot better.
