Most of my posts I tend to go on about the Savage Hog Hunter. That's how great it is.
This one in 223 is only $370+$15 shipping.
The barrel is a good heavy weight. Threaded with 1:9 twist, guys loading 75-77gn bullets are shooting great.
Stock is slightly better than the hogue the Remys come with.
But a B&C stock is a sweet upgrade.
An MDT LSS is even better.
Neither is required. I shoot sub moa with the green stock.
I just blue loctited the action to the stock and put an adjustable kydex cheek riser in and that's pretty much it.

Iron sights and internal mag make it SOOO much fun even WITHOUT a scope.

^ yes that is a fine rifle and price, threaded muzzle, accu trigger, three position tang safety, but no scope bases and accustock? I would prefer a rear peep farther back. too bad no one makes one that would sit on that receiver?

Op. If you want something decent out of the box-scope/ no scope.
Mossberg MVP. A lot of hate here for it because it's not as readily available to upgrade. But out the box with a scope you don't need anything other then to zero it in and your good. Awesome trigger and accuracy out the box as well. Highly underrated.

Hello, I am looking at purchasing my first rifle, I have been doing a fair bit of shooting with rented or borrowed rifles, and have decided on going for a .223 bolt action rifle. It is going to be used for punching holes in targets and hopefully moving up to long range target shooting . I have been looking at the savage axis and have heard good things about it for the price. I am looking to spend less then 750 dollars on the rifle not including glass or any accessories. Thanks for any recommendations or comments

OP - What I hear you saying is you want an entry level bench rifle in .223 that you can upgrade as funds allow.

I choose this route a couple years ago. The 700 sps tactical + H&S stock + replace trigger + Leupold scope and I am right about $1000 total give or take a little. when I bought the R700 sps tac in 223 was on sale for about $550.

Shoots great.

I think given what you say you are interested in doing the advice for the 700 sps tactical is the way to go.

Picked it up for $495.00 new, scope was $250.00, rings were $30.00 so I would say closer to $775.00 if you shop and get deals. Most people have a Rem 700, it is popular for a reason, it and the accessories for them are ubiquitous. The Savages are good rifles too, I think they are an excellent value. But some people want something a little different and the CZ527 fits the bill. And it is GTG out of the box, it doesn't need a better trigger, barrel or stock. For me personally, I refuse to buy any new gun that I immediately have to spend hundreds of dollars to swap out everything but the receiver because the factory parts are lousy. It's just like the M&P Shield, it's a $350.00 pistol, it seems counter intuitive to buy it, then spend another $350.00 on an aftermarket trigger, better sights, additional grip treatments. Why not spend $700.00 on a better pistol? But people do it every day, even though it is completely illogical. For under $500.00, I don't think there is a better out of the box rifle in it's "varmint" class.

I have an M&P Shield with a stock trigger that shoots fine out to 15yds. No need to change it. Just practice and get good with it.

I have a Savage with a plain crappy stock that I have no plans to change. Shoots under an inch at 100 yards.

So it's not an absolute must that things be swapped out.

With that said, this would make my Savage look very pretty....

Thank you all for your suggestions, I am going to do some research, I am leaning towards the Remington 700, cz 527, or the Mossberg MVP. I am going to try and get a feel for the different rifles at a local gun store, before purchasing anything though

Ok get the zastava m85 fullstock with double trigger, you will have lifetime bragging rights or at least the only one on the block to have that one

I just picked up a R700 SPS tac used at Turners. I lucked out as it had a Leupold VX3 mounted on and a Harris Bi-pod. Price was $650. 10 days can't come soon enough.
