    700 AAC vs MVP LR

so im wanting to start reaching out a bit farther than what my current rifle set ups can hit. i am set in my ways on getting a .308 for this rifle. something else down the road eventually. but im torn between 2 different rifles right now. the remington model 700 sps tactical aac and the mossberg mvp lr.

my main purpose of this rifle is for 1000m target shooting.

now i know that the 700 has essentially limitless upgrade options and aftermarket parts, and the 700's are extremely reliable and have that reputation. whereas the mvp is a new model that just came out and has little field time so far. i own a mvp predator in 5.56 and that rifle is a thing of beauty. accurate as heck out of the box, and being able to take ar mags is the greatest thing. so i feel comfortable with a new rifle that has no history yet.

both rifles have 20" barrels that are threaded and have a 1:10 twist rate. the mvp triggers are pretty awesome. i dont plan on changing that in my predator ever. the mvp comes already capable of accepting box mags and has a more solid stock, where as the 700 only holds 4 rounds and the houge overmold stock is a bit flexible and would need to be replaced. so the mvp lr already comes with all of the upgrades that i would want to make on the 700. do i just stick with the 700 and pay a bit extra to get the stock and mags, or do i save a bit and get the mvp lr which, at least for the time being, has no further customizations available??

anyone have experience with these model rifles and could chime in?

If you want 1km target, that's almost 1100 yards. You CAN make hits with a 20" barrel, but you are at a severe disadvantage. If you are set on 308 and plan on using a factory barrel, go with a 26" model. It will be infinitely better. On days with poor conditions, the 20" will simply crap out. Of course, with any 308, 1100 yards is pushing it and you need handloaded ammo. Pick an R700 with a 26" barrel to best accomplish your stated goal, and you may wish to rebarrel in the future to get a better barrel and maybe a better cartridge. I love 308, but an 1100 yard cartridge, it is not. (And yes you will get 1100 yard hits, but it'll give you much more difficulty than needed). 20" barrel, just don't.

      FAIL.

      1000M is about 1100yds.
If your MAIN purpose is 1000m shooting, you want a 26" barrel.

i was just going off of suggestions from a few guys ive spoken to at some of the lgs. i had though that i would needed the longer barrel before talking to them and then after reading some reviews, they all recommended the AAC to be decent choices for it.

That's what you get for believing the advice of gun store employees.

You haven't told us what your current rifle set ups are, perhaps they actually well work for what you want

So why not an MVP Varmint 308? It has 24" barrel and a stock similar to the MVP LR.

I had to avoid commenting on the Mossberg MVP circle jerk thread when the video about the "MVP LR" was posted as it is really no such thing as stated above. A lot of people seem to be jumping on the MVP bandwagon but I am far from convinced about the design and execution of these rifles. If they didn't accept magazines from popular semi autos I think they wouldn't sell nearly as well as they have.

Remington, while not my favorite, is going to be a much better platform for a long range rifle. Go 26" and I would say avoid the 1:10 twist in favor of the 11.25 or 12.

Looks like the MVP 308 Varmint must be popular or they didn't make very many, couldn't find any in stock online. http://www.tombstonetactical.com/cat...4in-10rd-gray/

The problem with the MVP is that the OP stated a goal of 1km shooting. That isn't chump change for a short action rifle. To do so well, he'll probably want to move up to some custom work, especially the barrel, which is most easily done on an R700 short action as an R700 short action is an R700 short action, which is as common as it gets and most easy to accommodate performance upgrades.

I am not familiar with the platform, but I'd be skeptical of the MVP due to the fact that it takes AR mags. AR mags are short and do not accomidate much extra length in a cartridge. Generally, with factory barrels, they are loose and sloppy in the chamber, so it may be beneficial to be able to load rounds longer. With AR magazines you generally do not have that option. You want to at least be able to touch the lands with what your magazine length allows. I'd be curious if they are chambered in such a manner that this works with PMags.

If the objective weren't as large, such as shooting to 600 yards, then it would seem that either choice would be more viable.

I hate to be a Randell fanboy but you should take his advice over anyone working at a LGS trying to sell you a rifle. Very few people here send more bullets down range each year than he does.

Both rifles are fine police sniper rifles. But remember that most police engagements are about 200 yards. I'm not saying that the shot can't be made with that cartridge and those rifles, but there are better Rem700s/rifles and better bullets for the job you are seeking. Shoot what you have and learn to read the wind. Hang out on the forums a little longer and see what other guys are shooting and you will get a better understanding of what's right for you and not have to take anyone elses advice (Even Randells).

If you go with the MVP, buy the MVP varmint model and then upgrade the stock, or get the MDT LSS drop-in chassis system. It is a GREAT little gun and that chassis is just the icing on the cake. I own the Varimint 5.56 and have the MDT, and can't say enough good about it.

I say the Varmint because it has a 24" barrel.

I also have the Remington 5R Mil Spec and it is a fantastic shooter also. I haven't REALLY stretched its legs much, but it consistently shoots also. Only problem I have is occasionally the Remington won't feed a round into battery. It won't pick up the round from the internal mag.

i mentioned that i have the mvp predator in 556. its the 20" with 1:9 twist. and with that ive hit about 880m with no wind. but that was just on a steel plate and not going for any groups. and my other rifle is a 16" ar that i dont really shoot more than about 350m with.

If you're talking about 1000yd+ in a 308 with 20" barrel, you want the 700 because you can get fit rounds with longer OAL in the internal magazine/AICS mags compared to the AR10 mags in the MVP.
