    Winchester Mod.70

Does anyone shoot/hunt with one of the Winchester Mod. 70 Super Grade rifle have anything good or bad to say about them. I'm thinking about one last big game hunting rifle and am considering it. I like the regular Super Grade and the Super Grade Maple. TIA

One of my dads has one in 300wsm. I gotta say its one of the most finely crafted rifles I have ever fondled. Id buy one in a heartbeat if I were you. The fit and finish are exceptional, and it shoots very well.

I use Win. Model 70 WSM actions as donor actions for my DG rifles. No, issues at all.

You can't go wrong with a Winchester Model 70!
I bought one in the mid-80's and have shot deer from the east coast to the west coast, plus a few places in between (so that many that I am prob on PETA's most-wanted list)

Mine is the featherweight model in .270 cal:

Any Winchester 70 will be fine. Some folks, especially old-school and collector folks, prefer the Mauser-style controlled round feed (CRF) that the pre-1964 rifles--and the very latest ones--have. There was some disdain for the push round feed (PRF) style, like the Remington 700 and Savage 10/110. Personally, I prefer the PRF Win 70 because it's a slightly stronger action, and the Win 70 was already plenty strong to begin with. They do tend to shoot very well, as quality rifles from all vendors do.

Winchesters seem to have a different feel than Remingtons or Savages. They seem to feel a bit more "solid", if you will, and that's even with changing riflestocks. My Rem 700 feels like a good, practical Honda Accord that happens to have pickup truck-like brute strength. Whereas, my Win 70 feels like a big-ol' pickup truck that just happens to be able to run with a Shelby Ford Mustang on the twisty country roads (think Dodge Ram Viper-RT/10 Edition). Personally, I like that a lot (the super-manoeuverable truck feel), but I also enjoy the R700 and Savage 110 quite a bit.

Personal preference, really. Do you like Mercedes, Lexus, or BMW? In the truck world, do you like Ford, Chevy, or Dodge (or something else)? Toyota, Honda, or Nissan? It's that sort of comparison.

I had one back in the 80's and took it elk hunting. It was in 270 Winchester caliber. I sighted it in at 200 yards, with after market iron sights, and I could get three shots inside of the 10 ring. It was a straight shooter, hit hard, very little recoil and looked nice. Like a dummy I sold it. Seems to me I sold it to my brother and it got stolen from him in a residential burglary.

Don't let the pre 64 hype get you, the newer ones are better.

I have only respect for my 1981 PRF 375 HH.....solid, beautiful and accurate. Do not fall for the 99% hype regarding control round feed yada yada.....only Winchester has a waggling finger pointed at it for utilizing push feed like most other manufacturers still use because they changed it up in 1964.

                    Beautiful rifle.

Always wanted one, but can't seem to part w/ my ol' M700BDL .270Win. Cut an inch off the butt and installed a Pachmayr F325 Deluxe 1" recoil pad. *****cat to shoot now, and MOA accurate.

                    Sure like those Featherweights, though.

Can't speak for the Super Grade, but will echo the statements that you really can't go wrong with either one. I owned two Remington's before buying my Winchester and will never go back. Looking at an Extreme Weather myself for hunting to accompany my Stealth. Great rifles, and recommend the CRF as it is much more positive feeding in my experience and the extraction is second to none. Get the one you think looks sexier.

I started this thread and wanted to take the time to say "Thanks" to the ones that posted something to it. Those that posted pictures, you have some nice stuff there. It's only a matter of time before I put a Mod. 70 CRF into the gun cabinet and having already looked at several it will be difficult to say the least on which one. As a example I looked/handled a Super Grade in 7X57 Mauser in Butte last Friday afternoon as well as a Fetherweight in another caliber. Still no decision made at this moment and I will continue to look for the one that really strikes my fancy. I have nothing against the push feed Mod 70 and already have a older one that is used exclusively as my cast bullet bottle neck rifle in 30-06. Its sighted for 50 yards and with the Lee 180 gr. nose rider RN and the load I use is a shooter, it could be used in the timber for deer or elk and black bear.

On the down side it seems as though there is a large group in the Forum (not this post) that have a "very real hate" for those of us that are now living in another state. They seem to be "proud" to throw **** in peoples faces for no other reason than "your not from here" and believe in their hearts that they are better than others from somewhere else. As one who has from day one defended Californians and California the state to some degree from the attacks by others not from Calif. I find this dis-heartening to say the least, I am a son of California and will always be I will never be ashamed of my birth home. It's a shame that others cant see it the way I do. Since the feelings are so strong by so many I am after this post and will probably always be a 99.9% non posting reader. If the hate continues I see no reason to even read. Thank you again for your input you have been gentlemen in this thread.

                        Regards

You can't go wrong with the M70. I own two CRF models, one in 300 Win Mag and one in 416 Rem Mag. For whatever reason, the 416 is the tack driver, not to say the 300 is bad, after trying many different loads, the best I have been able to do is slightly over an inch at 100 yds. with 180 gr A Frames. The first three out of the 416 all touch with 350 gr A Frames.

I only wish there was a legitimate shot at an elk tag in California, and hold no animosity towards those who do in any state.

Back in the early 80's my dad had a Super grade that was chambered in 300 Weatherby. He used it hunting out here in Ca,Ut,and Colorado. After he passed away I believe one if his brothers purchased it from my Mom.I haven't seen that gun in at least 20years.

I have both flavors of Mod. 70, a Lightweight in .30-06 (push-feed) and a Classic Laredo in .300 Win Mag (CRF). They are both ridiculously accurate. The Lightweight does under 1/2" at 100 with Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. I havent tested the .300 with as many brands as I'd like, but it did "like" the Fusion and 180gr X bullet from PMC. (The Laredo was Winchester's answer to the Remington 700 Sendero.. came from the factory with a pillar-bedded stock from HS Precision, and the barrels were also made by an outside source (I've heard Douglas and Hart, and others, but nothing authoritative) They made them with and without the BOSS brake and in 7 Mag, .300 Mag and 7 STW. ) It's actually pleasant to shoot, despite being a .300 Mag.
