    Ammo recommendations for 223 VSSF

I have a Remington 700 VSSF 26 inch barrel with 1 in 12 twist that shoots a 223. I purchased this years ago when I didn't know any better. It has sat in the safe fairly unused especially after 2006 when AR lowers became available in CA.

Again, because I didn't know any better when I first started, I shot it using cheap bulk Winchester white box ammo or PMC ammo. . I bought it new on sale years ago for $600, so I never took advantage of how accurate this varmint rifle really is.

So my question is, for a rifle with a 1 in 12 twist, what match ammo out there would you recommend for bench rest, target shooting at 100 yards?

Should I stick to 55 grains and less, or can I venture in 67 grain? Or the twist too slow for a heavier bullet like that?

It seems like all the match 223 ammo out there is in the 77 grain range. What brand match ammo are you using for a rifle like this?

Just to be clear, you're looking for factory ammo, correct?

50 or 55 grain. My 1:10" twist 22.250 will not stabilize the 77 grain SMKs.

        50 or 52 grain.

          Factory?

          Or reloading?

Anything under 62 grains will stabilize just fine.

If factory, but a few different boxes of ammo from 50-65grains and see what your gun likes.

Are there any particular brand match ammo you prefer over the other?

get into reloading and with 55 gn match type bullets you can get clost to 1 hole groups.

I've always had good luck with Black Hills and Federal Gold Medal Match.

Although it's not labeled as "Match" ammo, Hornady Vmaxs tend to group very well for most people.

Yes, and it can only be loaded with a 52gr SMK...

See if you can find the Winchester bulk packed 45gr HP ammo.
That stuff shoots excellent in many factory rifles, especially ones with 1:12 twist barrels.
                          Avoid anything heavier than 62gr.

i have same rifle same year etc

55 grain vmax bullets do best i tend to shoot fiocchi 50 or 55 grain vmax box ammo and have excellent results with my gun. much past 55 grain my groups open up

at 200 yards i can cover a 4 shot group with a nickle but then again the guy operating it....

i run a timney trigger at 2 lbs

i don’t see any point in the heavier bullets or rebarreling it I’m killing prairie dogs and coyotes at up to 500 yards and past that. at a certain point i just know to use my .220 swift or .243 for those longer shots. but even with 40 grain bullets this thing is a tack driver

Try Fiocchi brand, anything with Nosler in 40 to 52 grains. Black Hills is always good too.
