    next gun

Since i have my AR now and have an ak in jail lookin for a bolt action as my next long gun... looking into 308 win however not sure what brand... looking into remington or savage.

Just looking to go maybe 500 yds through paper and not doing any competition or hunting. Any feedback for any brand is welcome. this will narrow down my research..

Either one will do what you want, since you are not hauling it around I'd look at heavy barrel or varmint models. The Remington 700 or Savage 10(?) series are kind of the "every man's bolt gun". If you decide you want to play around and upgrade them later the 700 will have more possibilities. Either model has plenty of variants so you can pick and choose the features you want.

That being said I've owned two Remington's and my shooting buddy is obsessed with Savage and now I won't buy the former in stock form or the latter ever. I prefer pre-64 action Winchester 70's. Tikka also makes great rifles. If you are on a budget, the Ruger American seems to keep impressing people as well.

I had an opportunity to shoot a friend's Tikka heavy barrel .308 off the bench, and it produced a one hole group at 100 yards. That should translate fairly well out to 500.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

How about a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2? Guaranteed 1 MOA out of the box. I'll be buying one, but am opting for the Sporter version because I like wooden stocks.

I'm usually a budget guy, and I like the Ruger American, and really like the Mossberg MVP series. I have the MVP Patrol in .556 and plan on getting the .308, really happy with the gun. If you are just looking at a solid range gun, seems like these would work, and spend the extra money on a solid scope.

Mossberg MVP in 308. And, they have a new LC chassis that is coming in 308 - they say Aprilish time.

You probably need to specify a rough budget. Bolt actions .308s will run about $300-$6,000. Then, you will want a scope that will also run about $300-$6,000.

Looking at a bolt action under 800 or so and a scope about the same price.. so roughly $1600 or so for both..

Trying to see if i should pay a little less on the rifle itself and spend more on glass..

Yes and no. You don't want to put a $1300 scope on a $300 Savage Axis for example. But if you got a lightly used rifle for $600 then spending $1000 on a scope wouldn't be a bad way to go.

You also want to think about replacing the cheap plastic stock on ANY rifle in the $600 or less price range.

I always recommend a Remington 700 for the price range your shopping in. Reason being, the aftermarket is so much better than any other rifle. That will provide a platform to grow with for years.

From my experience, it's hard to beat a Tikka or a Savage out of the box. I have 2 Tikka T-3 Lites in .243 and .300 Win. They both shoot extremely well - sub-moa all day long, though the .300 kicks a bt in that light rifle. The .243 usually shoots under a half inch with 70 gr Blitzkings and Varget. I have a couple Savages and they also shoot well under an inch and often a half-inch or under. Remingtons have shot well for me, too, but usually require more tweaking.

My hunting buddy has a Savage 12BVSS in .223 that shoots lights out, and it is also available in .308.

The vtr wasn't available in my area so I went with the Remington 700 sps tactical in 20in .308
