A good precision rifle that I could possibly hunt with?

I know they are two completely different beasts, but I've wanted to get a bolt action for a while. My grandfather used to hunt on the his family farm and I received a bit of inheritance after his passing. Figured I'd get something to remember him by and pass on to my kids. It's either a rifle or a browning buckmark 22 lol.

I figure the thousand dollar mark is a good spot though il figure glass out later. I'd prefer savage over remington. FN even better like the trs but I can't find a price on those. There's so many different models with savage that it's daunting. Ideally I would have loved their detachable 10 round AI mag fcp model that is discontinued.

I won't be reloading for a while but would like to in the future so not sure if that steers the 308 vs 06 question.

You will not find a better rifle at a better deal.
Steyr pro hunter in '06 with a stainless barrel, removable magazine, Zeiss scope.
It'll shoot as good as a competition rifle and is light enough to carry all day.

    I've been eyeing it myself.

It's brand new and has a 6-700$ Zeiss scope on it.....quite the deal.

I've been looking into snagging one of these. http://www.turners.com/howa/howa-alp...r-39x40-276678

Can be had for around $1000 without glass. Can install 10rd detachable mags.

Serving 2 masters only makes sure you short change both.

A Tikka .308 Varmint is a good start. You can get one for under 1k, has a detachable box mag, pretty much any kind of aftermarket chassis/stocks that you may want later, and is ridiculously accurate out of the box. They are typically half MOA shooters right out of the box or less depending on your shooting skill and bullet choice. Don't let people shy you away from the brand because of aftermarket either, because they make just about anything you could imagine for the Tikka.

Out of the box with a scope and bipod from Google:

Thanks guys I've had a friend mention howa but never seen the styer. Il research some of that.

Spamsucker, I'm aware of the old saying and since I've never gone hunting and have the AR to finally get going with hogs let's just say target precision shooting to get into, and could possibly take into the fields for a deer when I finally get time to find someone to take me out. I just know most precision guys completely their rifles apart and rebuild them, this was gonna be bought with some money my grandfather left me and that I'd want to be a able to use with my boys and leave to them.

My first choice would have been the Remington 5R Mil Spec .308 but you said you didn't really like the idea of a Remington. Personally, I own one and it is just ridiculous out of the box with a 24" .875 stainless barrel using Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr SMK rounds. I was pulling off .375" and .4" groups on day one.

I know it's a classic, but I'd want to throw it in mega arms new chasis, plus quality control has been plummeting with all the other issues at their plant hence why I was leaning to savage. But I won't rule it out if there's a really good one. That's probably what he had as well.

Loving the stainless. I actually handled a savage model 10 FCP at dicks a while back, it had a fluted barrel, not sure the quality of the stock but it had digital camo I didn't care about but everything else felt really solid. It looked much like their discontinued 10 round detach box model

Gotta ask yourself how precise you want it. It gets nuts and expensive.

A roughly half inch at 100 rifle can be had pretty cheap. The price skyrockets for those extra tenths of an inch. A $350 savage will shoot sub moa.

Yeah i think sub moa is fine by me. A few of the Savage with detachable mags peaked my interest model 10 fcp hs or going a little higher at the FNH TSR XP has always been beautiful to me

If you buy a 10lb rifle and then do much hunting with it, you're going to wish you didn't.

If you're going to go on guided hog hunts and be shooting out of the guide's truck, that's one thing. If you're going to actually hunt and haul it around all day on your shoulder, not one of the rifles pictured so far are suitable..... they are fine rifles, but much too heavy for regular hunting use.

Personally, I've shot a Tikka 308 Varmint, but only at 100 yards. At that distance, it was stacking the bullets. I ended up buying a Tikka T3 Lite, which shoot sunder an 1" at the same distance. It is my primary pig rifle and is a wonderful shooter. I hunt public land pigs, so I'm out and about all day with the gun in my hands or on my shoulder. I used to haul around heavy rifles, but they are just excess weight for what I do.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

Yeah i started on an ultralight build for an AR shooting for 7 pounds. Which ballooned to 9 pounds after optic. I guess I just need to realize I can't have both and probably go with a precision rifle first and if the AR can't get it done out on a hunt or two then it will be time to step up.

Found this Dark Eagle mag company and that has opened up a few more savage options for me other then FNH tsr xp
