    Remington 700 build

if you guys were going to do a 308 Remington build, would you purchase a modern produced sps tactical or 700 5R and customize as you saw fit?
Or would it be better to purchase a Remington 700 BDL action and build off of that?
Is it better to get a short action or long action? There is one for sale for $400 and it was originally chambered in 30-06.

If your going to customize start as a bare action or basic factory rifle.

Because if you customize your initially taking off 60% of the stuff you paid for in that 5R, VTR, ect ect option.

If your looking to go full on, custom action.

If your looking to maybe build a good rifle but not go all in a factory trued acfion.

If you just want to change a stock or barrel buy a factory base option with low end parts you are already looking to replace.

It all depends on what you want to do.

I bought my 700 as a base gun that I could build up as I shot more. If I were to do it all at once, I would have done things differently.

What are you trying to do with it? How far are you planning on taking it out?

How custom are you looking to get involved in?

I have one of their 5R rifles and am very satisfied with it. Additions that I have done is added bottom metal and threaded the barrel to put a brake on it.

The 5R barrel will do you very well and to me it is worth spending the extra money for the barrel even if you do not plan on keeping the stock.

Just the action or the whole gun for $400?

I think 30-06 is long action. If you are building a .308 I believe you want a short action. In my opinion, it is best to buy a basic .308 and change parts as you go along. That is how I like to do it. You can shoot it while you save up to buy parts, and the best part is when you make an improvement you can see the difference. That way you are learning as you go instead of just buying some gun all done up.

You can still build a .308 on a long action

                Remington 700 build

Depends as someone else said, on how custom you plan on building out the action. Below is a brief recap of what it might cost to do a first class job to bring a stock 700 action up to what you get in some custom actions. You can see it closely costs about the same as some custom actions.

$400 Base action as you listed
$150 badger ordnance steel 20 MOA rail
$50 Heavy duty and precision ground recoil lug
$75-$100 for premium bolt handle installed
                $100 for bolt fluting
$300 for truing action, tapped for larger action screws and bolt face
                $125 M16 mini extractor
So your precision action now cost you over $1,200

A Defiance Deviant might cost you about $1,300 but the entire action recoil lug and 20MOA rail are edm cut out of one piece of SS. This also provides more barrel to action contact.

Just buy the 5R and shoot it, then modify as you see fit IMO. If your already a great shooter then you probably already owned one, modified it and know exactly what you want, then maybe build something custom from the ground up.

My 5R can outshoot me, so I see no need to heavily modify it for now, except making it fit me more comfortably.

Your list is missing one very important part. THE STOCK.

That can add anywhere from $500 to $1200 depending on what you get.

OP your build can go from mild to wild. Your best off talking to Randal at 700barrels.com about your build. He's both here on Calguns and the Caprc forums. Also don't forget to leave room in your budget for optics which can cost as much as your build.

You can try this fully custom action for less than 900 that already has a rail, custom bolt handle, and is an octagonal action for better bedding with the stock you choose....

You can try this blueprinted 700 with custom bolt, bottom metal, a magazine, and a trigger for a tiny bit more.....

Or, you could try this blueprinted action for on the down low price

It is, there is one caliber possibly one of the 2 that can be chambered in short or long. But I think above is correct.
