Certainly not necessary. Probably not a big deal one way or another for most shooters. If you have the spare $$ and you feel the need, go for it.

I've been running my blocks for years and thousands of rounds without one with no problem... I can't see why one would hurt though. Maybe when you are shooting in the rain, all the water that hits the top of the slide gets channeled down the back of the grip and it acts like a rain gutter
