Used Ruger lineup of pistols, although they are more affordable they are high value quality pistols that I would probably trust my life on.

dude, just get a hi point in 9mm. Its a got a lifetime no questions asked transerfable warranty. Its practically indestructable anyway so you dont even need the warranty. You can get them for under $150. 9mm ammo is cheap and plentiful (plus its a real bullet, dont know how much you plan on doing with a .22) Its acurate enough and is everything you will need in a first handgun.

Used Ruger .22, I have heard good things about the Phoenix arms HP22, For a bit more money($319 IIRC from the new turners quarterly sale catalog) you can get a GSG 1911 in .22lr.

There are also a couple of single action .22lr revolvers in that price range, but I have never used them and cant speak for their quality one way or the other.

Bu a ruger or browning .22 pistol used is about as cheap as they get. Ive seen one sell for $100 or around there.
