Show off your custom/semi custom 1911s!

And tell us a little bit about them.

    Here's mine

    Base pistol: SA
Smith: Don Williams (Action Works in AZ)

I had this pistol built in 2004 for tactical style matches and I picked the features based on what I learned from shooting my PC945 (back in the day when I was semi competent and decently fast). Don installed ambi safeties, a beavertail, a "street" weight trigger job and sights among other things. I also indulged in a few cosmetic touches. You can see here that I had the muzzle flushed with the bushing and the slide release countersunk. The grips are Arizona Ironwood worked on by Hakan Pek of Norway. You old school pistoleros probably remember who he is.

Detail of the front strap (20 lpi), trigger guard bottom (30 lpi) and trigger guard front (25 lpi) checkering. All these help me to control the gun better.

The sights are Wilson. I like big barn door size sights.

I also had Don serrate the rear of the slide and the extractor (they line up!).

Paid what I though was an awful lot of money for this piece and waited two years but she shoots great and is very easy to control.

So that's my custom 1911 story. Show yours!

    Here are my custom 1911s...

I have 5 custom 1911 pistols all worked on by Mark Bunach (http://www.ocgunsmith.com/). I've known him since around 2005. The first gun I brought him was this one:

    .45 ACP "Basic" 1911

I wanted a .45ACP pistol so bad, and the 1911 just called to me. It's a classic & robust design with a history as a fighting pistol and as king of the range. My father carried one during his time in service (1966-1976), and so did my grandfather (WWII, Korea, & Vietnam).

At the time I bought my first 1911, Rock Island Armory pistols were new on the market and inexpensive. They were decently made and affordable. I swapped out parts as I could afford them. That was what I ended up with. Right now that gun is currently being re-purposed by Mr. Bunach for me to compete in local NRA bullseye competitions.

    Here's my second 1911 pistol...

    .45 ACP "MEU-SOC Inspired" 1911

It started life the same as my "Basic" 1911 build above. But, I lent it to a close friend of mine and he took it with him when he deployed to Afghanistan as a security contractor. He was injured in an IED. When I got the gun back, it was messed up: rusted, scratched, and pitted from shrapnel. I was given the gun back in a double-lined Ziploc bag, soaking in CLP. I handed it over to Mr. Bunach, along with a box of parts, and I told him what I wanted him to do for me. That's how it turned out. I was supremely pleased with Mr. Bunach's work. After that, he was the only gunsmith I had work on my pistols. Currently, that pistol is my "bump-in-the-night" gun.

I was starting to carry my "Basic" 1911 more for work, and I was starting to enjoy shooting it at tactical shooting classes and in local combat shooting matches. But, compared to the 1911s some of the other shooters had, it was a pretty plain Jane gun. I got to play with a few different types and I learned that I liked XS Big Dot sights, long triggers, 4-1/2 LB trigger pull, ambidextrous safeties, extended mag releases, and mag wells. So, I decided to have another 1911 project done for me by Mr. Bunach. Here's what we came up with:

    .45 ACP "Custom Duty" 1911

Eventually, I got a CCW. I was traveling a lot for work. I decided that I did not always like carrying a full-size 1911. And, Rock Island Armory came out with a compact model. So, I had to add one to my collection. I kept a lot of the same features of my other 1911s: long trigger, 4-1/2 LB trigger pull, XS Big Dot sights, and an extended mag release. Plus, I added a full-length two-piece guide rod. I originally had the gun finished in electroless nickel, but since then, I have had the gun Cerakote finished -- since I was going to be carrying it IWB and I tend to sweat a bit.

    .45 ACP "Custom Compact" 1911

The last one I had Mark Bunach work on for me was this one:

    9mm "Bowling Pin Match" 1911

I tried my hand at bowling pin shooting competitions. I really liked it. It was a lighthearted competition, but it was addictive. I enjoyed it. At the same time, I was also getting into Steel Challenge. Shooting .45ACP for a match can get pricey. So, I found a CalGunner who had a 9mm Rock Island Armory 1911 for sale. The rest is history.

I love my 1911 collection and will never sell those pistols. I'll pass them down to my kids one day. Mr. Bunach did excellent work, and they are truly one of a kind pistols.

Let's see some more custom 1911 pistols, CalGunners. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil
