    1911: 100+ years going strong?

The idiot scratch thread really got me thinking of how good a gun the 1911 actually is in 2015.

Bear with me because something tell me this post will get a lot of hate.

With the numerous options available to consumers - Glock, CZ, Sig, S&W, and yes even the XD, why do people still pick the 1911? You can have a lighter gun with more bullets, similar accuracy and more reliability for half the cost.

Think about it: if you can damage the gun from putting it back together then it's not a good design.

Rebuttal: IF it is a good design, then how come you can't idiot scratch a Glock?

Like I said at the get go, I know from experience this post will get a lot of hate. But, this is CalGuns.net afterall, and I like to think we're more mature around here. Let's have a good discussion about this. Anyone who snipes troll will rightfully be ignored.

People do love their 1911's. It seems to be going strong to me. There are lots of nice new 1911's out there and more each year.

I think if you are going to argue against the 1911 being a good option in the modern world, the idiot scratch thing would not even be on the radar.

If you were really trying you could come up with a few better arguments...

More than a few idiots have had NDs while breaking down their tupperware guns. To me, a ND is far worse than a NS (negligent scratch). Therefore, Glocks are a far worse design than a 1911. I'll stick to my reliable 1911s with scratches over my Glock. Besides, I shoot my single stacks better than any double stacked gun I've ever fired.

It's a scratch ... cosmetic damage. Only reason to complain of them because it shows lack of user knowledge and people treat 1911s as art.

I doubt people who used these guns in combat cared about an idiot mark, considering they probably also used them as hammers. Every manufacture you listed, except for Glock, has made their own 1911. For what it's worth I've had more problems with Glocks than 1911s, and I'm a fan of both.

If you can shoot, a 1911 is like a great driver with a sports car.

I can make headshots with a Glock at 25 yards. I can do it easier and faster with a 1911

Edit: And this is coming from a long time 1911 hater who thought it had no place with all the modern guns.

I really can't think of many other 100 year old guns that are still in wide use..

Wonder what it will be like in another 100 years.

If I can only have two firearms, then one of them is a 1911.

The arguement it self is as useful as vouching rocks and bows are the best weapons around... Becase they have been around for millions of years..... Right? I mean that's the same logic as the 1911 being so amazing cause it's been around and in service for xxxx time..

The gun is old, the gun has been redesigned almost completely, the gun is good. Never the best, never the worst, just been around. Which is why I hate when people bring it up like its an accomplishment. Existing for a long time doesn't make it the best.

Again being that logic would mean rocks and bows are better than the 191- by leaps and bounds... Which isn't the case IMO.

Shoot one. You'll understand. Shoot a high end one, you'll be in love.

A Ferrari is a pain to keep running properly, and so low to the ground a speed bump will wipe it out and total it. But that doesn't mean it is crap.

I'm a Glock guy. If I am in a firefight I want a Glock as my sidearm (hopefully as a secondary to a rifle but still).

Never the less there is nothing like shooting a well made 1911 for the pure joy of shooting. That is not to say I would not trust my life to my 1911. I'm just better with the Glock when it comes to the manual of arms and speed off the draw. If I had 20 years of muscle memory and training put into the 1911 like I do the Glock I might choose it as my first choice for self defense - but I don't.

See the thing is, there's not anything a newer design pistol can do that a 1911 cant do (and many instances the 1911 does it better)aside from capacity, that's why it's impressive about how old the design is

The idiot scratch is avoidable and a non issue if it does happen, by that logic the ak is the worst rifle design in existence right? Since you physically cannot operate the safety without causing a scratch...wonder why it's probably the most used infantry rifle in existence

For most of us here in Cali more bullets means 10 at the moment.

Obviously not, if an "idiot scratch" is what makes a gun's quality come into question.

Whether you shoot a high end 1911 or a no frills model, it'll fit your hand like no other. The trigger will spoil you. It points perfectly.

Most problems are magazine related. That's a fact. All the interwebz lore is just tht. They are not high maintenance. That's a myth. Routine cleaning is all that's needed. And that's hardly a burden.

Yes I love my 1911's. Honestly, SHTF I'll probably grab my 226 (non Kali model) and/or my w.german 228 (Cold War vintage baby!!!). But I'd be just as happy with my stable of sam colts children.

1911's are every bit as great as they were 100 years ago. And considering modern metallurgy and machining, better.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
