    S&W Revolver help/identify

My friend is selling his S&W revolver but does not know what model it is. I'm interested in buying it but I would like to do more research before I buy. Don't have a pic yet but it is stainless, looks exactly like a model 642 but you can manually cock the internal hammer. Hopefully my description is not confusing.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the 'body guard' model

It looks like that, just stainless and black rubber grips.

How much should I offer? Looks to be in 80-85% condition. 38 special +p

Look up the serial number on one of the many sites that list serial numbers by year.

No need to use a lot of +P ,just load it if you CCW , Mine is the M-38 and has a Alloy frame .

Model number should be engraved near the crane when you open the cylinder on most models.

If Stainless steel, looks like it could be a 649.

                All stainless steel, model 649.
                Alloy frame, model 638.

The blue carbon steel model 49 bodyguard was not rated for +P. I don't know about the all stainless version 649 but would not be surprised if it also were not rated for +P.

Both came with shrouded hammer and seem to be otherwise identical.
