    Walther P99 .40 cal- opinions?

Would like some opinions of the Walther P99. The one with the DA trigger with decocker.

I have fired it and it was ok, recoil and trigger wasnt bad but not my cup of tea. I actually preferred the S&W99 in 40 S&W. The link below is a really good source of info for the P99.

I've wanted a P99 for a while, though in 9mm. If you notice, seems like the only ones you ever see here on the market are the .40 S&W versions... that makes me think there's a reason people are holding on to their 9mm and selling the .40s.

I have both(9 MM and 40 Cal) and they both shoot very well. The 40 caliber is more snappy than the 9 MM but I actually shoot the 40 Cal better (smaller groups) but not necessarily faster follow up shots.

The AS trigger models have a decocker so you do not have to pull the trigger to take the gun down. I recently purchased the PPQ 5 inch in 40 Cal and shot t side by side with my P99 AS 40 Cal. I prefer the P99 AS but I have about 2000 rounds through that gun and only 200 rounds through the PPQ.

Since there is no safety on the P99 or PPQ I like the heavier first trigger pull of the P99. The PPQ is more like a super light Glock trigger. I definitely do not feel comfortable carrying the PPQ in stock form.

I own one in 40 S@W and haven't shot it much due to having other favorites. It is easy to shoot , the decocker is really nice and the Da/sa trigger takes some practice to master its advantages but it is really "sweet" and the s/a is about as nice as needed. and the accuracy is scary good. I would buy another one with out reservations . I am thinking of adding it to the CCW as it is that nice.

There's one in the FS section, priced very right, but been bumped for 2 months now... BECAUSE it's a .40. If it were a 9, it would have sold in ONE HOUR at that price.

It is a nice piece compared to comparable .40 cal pistols but the 9mm is a better gun overall and much more user friendly.

If you have your heart set on a .40 it is still a great example.

Still looking for a P99 DA/SA in .40? I have one in pristine condition I am willing to part with. ...original owner with reciept and exactly 50 rounds down the tube.

Its a great gun, period. Buy whatever fits your hand and you feel comfortable with. I bought one because it was Bonds gun. I kept it because I like the way it fits my hand and shoots. The de-cocking feature is really nice.

Personally, I like the P99 design (and also the later PPQ)---I prefer it in 9mm (cheaper ammo, less kick) over the 40, but a lot of that is because I am invested in 9mm ammo and not 40.
I bought a used (but mint) S&W SW99 (pretty much the same pistol - frame is even made by Walther in Germany) in 45 ACP and the thing shoots very well. The trigger will probably not please trigger snobs, but I still shoot it just fine...

I actually prefer the P99 AS (9mm) over the newer PPQ. It is a very interesting design and I like the ability to decock the striker into a double action mode. I'm really surprised it didn't garner more favor with law enforcement agencies.

The P99 in 40 is noticeably snappier than the 9mm and other 40s I have. Had both and got rid of the 40 because it just wasn't fun for me after about 100 or so rounds. I was probably spoiled by having the 226ST in 40. Have since gotten a M&P 40 and liked it better than the P99 40 also. Not b/c of the ergos (liked the P99 better) but b/c it was not as snappy (lower bore access on the M&P).

B/c of my experience with the P99 in 40, I never got a PPQ in 40. Loved the P99 so much that I did get the 4 and 5 inch 9mm in the PPQ variant.

Hope that helps and good luck with your decision.
