    Cal DOJ Roster Question

DOJ Roster for Smith/Wesson says that revolvers currently on the roster with the letter "A" or "B" after the product code, will have the letter (A or B) engraved under the top strap of the revolver. The gun I want to buy is the model 327 TRR8. It went off roster late last year. It is now on roster with the letter "A" after it. Can someone advise - what's going on? Who will engrave these letters, etc????

    Thanks folks.

      Addendum

I should have said I sent SW an email about this last month, but received no reply. I see nothing in their site that indicates anything about any letters....... Hope someone here knows for sure!

If you want the revolver you can get the one you want via SSE 2.0. I'm going to get a S&W 686+ 3" that way.
I also have no idea what the A or B represents all I know is it's for CA only. I prefer the model everyone else can buy.

As for the Roster I think it will disappear in 2016.

How long did the CA Shield finally hit our market in mass after announcement? I would not expect to see any A stamped Smiths until the 4th quarter of this year.

As far as I understand, the SAE is still intact and the demise of the SSE did not affect it, so you can get one without the "A" from out of state if you transfer it through the right FFL.

It may be a long while before you see the A model on that. I would just get one via the Single Action exemption. Find a FFL who will work with you or maybe someone can chime in with FFL recommendations for SAE in your area.

Look at certguns.doj.ca.gov for the CA roster on handguns. Then select Smith & Wesson for gun manufacturer and it will show you an example of the letter A under the topstrap of the pistol. There are some online retailers that have these "new" models available.

Have any idea which online retailers? As some of the guys suggest perhaps I can ask around about sse's. In another thread I asked what an SAE was - never got an answer. Can anyone direct me were to read up on that as well?

                  Thank you all.

You can do a search on gunwatcher.com and if you see the revolver you are looking for in stock, ask them if there is an "A" under the topstrap of the revolver. I also asked some sellers on gunbroker and a few did have Smith revolvers that were engraved. Hope that helps.

Search for threads in this forum with "SAE" in the title, there are quite a few with answers to questions like "what is SAE" and "who can do a SAE transfer in my area"?. More or less, it's SSE for revolvers - you or your FFL convert an off-roster revolver to single action only (which is more complicated than SSE for a pistol was), your FFL does the DROS, then you or your FFL convert it back. There are other restrictions on minimum barrel length and total gun length, but the gun you are looking at should be fine.

                              Ever heard of Gunbroker.com???
There are hundreds of gun dealers advertising there. Find one that has your gun, call them and see it has the "A". Can't be that difficult.
