    S&W SD9ve FTHOOLRF

I'm not sure if there's an acronym for failure to hold open on last round fired, so I figured I'd make one.

I've had my S&W for 2 weeks and have taken it out as many times. Before I fired a single shot I installed the Apex trigger kit and cycled my dummy round (ones meant for dry firing) many times to help limber it up. I put 3 types of steel/aluminum cased ammo and brass cased Tula through it without a single issue.

The first time that is. This morning I took it out and while there were no issues whatsoever, the slide did not lock upon the last round being fired. I've been fooling around with my grip, stance, pull, POA, and everything else as this is my first pistol. I tried not taking my finger completely off the trigger face like Jerry Miculek recommends. I got much better accuracy but could something like this be causing the slide not to lock? I took it apart and thoroughly cleaned like I do after every outing and didn't see anything obviously wrong.

    Ideas?

One common problem with all polymer frame guns is that the gun gets a bunch lighter as the mag empties.
This makes the gun (frame) easier to move as the ammo is depleted as there is less resistance to movement with the lighter weight.
A really firm grip and locked wrists is needed so the slide has a non-moving platform to run on.
If your grip or wrists are loose, the slide may not be coming all the way back far enough to allow the SS to engage.

I have a friend who is a new shooter who also just got his first gun, the SD9.
He had some jams / failures to feed.
He had the same problem with my Ruger SR45, that I know works perfectly.
Once I got him to tighten his grip and lock the wrists, the problems all went away.

You don't need a death grip on the gun, just hold it firmly.

Is your thumb riding the slide stop? With you being conscious about your grip, stance, pull, and everything else, your thumb may be positioning itself on the slide stop without you realizing it.

I wish it was the stop, but I'm a lefty so there's nothing on the stop. Just to check, I went from holster to on target and saw that my grip doesn't have my thumbs on the slide at all. I'm hoping that it is a loose grip as I really can't see anything else it could be. Oh well, guess I need to go out to the range again tomorrow to find out. Oh noez, more time shooting to figure out what's happening. Thanks all!
