    CZ 75B - success with a 16 year old

I started my son shooting in our "informal" action pistol matches at Burro Canyon a few months ago. He has a Kimber 1911 in .45 ACP that he loves, but I noticed in the matches that he was anticipating the recoil and jerking the trigger, pushing the gun down, etc. (He's a very skinny kid.) So I had him try my FEG HP clone in 9mm, and he liked shooting it but we couldn't get the sights (LPI after market adjustable) low enough for him. I picked up a CZ 75 B with night sights, and he seems to do very well with it. He cleaned the Texas Star with just a couple extra rounds needed...and he may have beat me in at least one of the pistol stages and probably beat me in the 3-gun! He now claims the CZ as his. :-)

Cool story OP, it won't be his last CZ. When do they have pistol matches @ Burro's?

Good deal. Awesome that he "found" his gun.

As above, when are these pistol matches held?

      Enjoy and stay safe.

Your CZ has been claimed! Great reason to buy another one.

        Thank you for sharing OP.

We have monthly matches at Burro Canyon where we rent a private range. It's the "No Name Pistol Club" and was originally one of the airplane manufacturers' pistol club. We used to shoot at San Gabriel and when that range shut down, we had to move to Burro Canyon. We lost a lot of members at that time. We have our own pepper poppers, a steel plate rack, multiple stands for silhouettes and some steel targets made by our members. One of the guys brought that Texas Star this month. Sometimes there are only 4 of us shooting, but this month there were 10 of us. We charge $30 each to pay for the range and replace cardboards silhouettes and pasters, etc. No dues or such.

We shoot the second Saturday of every month, at range C ( I think - it is the one closest to the gate.) Usually 2 pistol stages and a 3-gun stage. With the plate rack and the Texas Star, it was an "ammo dump" as some took a lot of shots to clear both, but normally 100 rounds of pistol ammo, 20 rounds of rifle and a box or less of shotgun ammo for all stages. I usually bring 150 rounds of pistol ammo to be safe. We start around 9 AM. Score is kept but just for bragging rights. :-) we're not youngsters, most of us, so not a lot of "running and gunning," though we usually have some movement involved to shoot at multiple targets.

^^^Sounds like fun. If "non-members" can join you guys sometimes, I think some people here may be interested.

Stay safe and keep on runnin' and gunnin'

We welcome people to join us! Allen joined us after I posted on this site a few years ago and has been shooting with us ever since.

You should give him some professional training next.... several good schools in the So Cali area. Also consider taking him out to observe and then compete in an IDPA match...

These pistol matches are they also a way for shooters to learn technique when shooting? I am interested in attending one if possible.

IDPA and USPSA handgun matches are very good for "continuing" to develop skills you have already learned. You will be at a great disadvantage without some solid formal training in the basics that lays down the foundation of muscle memory.

I really recommend that you find a "good" professional handgun class or classes and take them. It is well worth the time, effort and money.

YOU want to look for a school that starts with a solid foundation in the basics and then goes on to develop tactical awareness. THEN you can shoot matches to maintain and enhance the skill set.

If you find you are really into the competition, then you should further take classes from successful competitors/instructors to enhance your competitiveness and advance in the sport.

PM me for a couple of recommendations in the So Calif. area. There are a few schools to stay clear of too as their credentials and safety records are questionable at best. Expect to spend $200/day plus ammo for any good training.

Thanks for the info. I'll send a PM for the info. One of our members is a retired LA County Sheriff firearms and tactics instructor, who learned the Weaver stance from jack Weaver himself, won 5 consecutive gold medals at the national police Olympics and was the officer-involved shooting investigator for the LA CO Sheriff's Dept. (He doesn't use the Weaver stance himself any more - modified isosceles triangle is what he prefers.) Harold does a class for us at least once a year. "Real world" info versus competition. Another member is the current So Cal firearms instructor/range officer for ICE.

If my son takes to this, I'll certainly look for formal instruction and take him to some IDPA matches and if he's interested and motivated enough, sign him up for some matches. He is really good with a rifle since he has been focused on hunting - now he is getting into trap and handguns.

Next Saturday is our next match. It's Valentine's Day so turnout may be low. I'll be there, though. Burro Canyon at 9 AM.

Actually - I won't be there this Saturday. We don't normally have too much "running and gunning" in our matches, but a new, younger guy drew up this month's match and there is a lot of running. My poor arthritic knees are not up to it.
