Glock 27 vs 30SF vs 36

Hey guys, I can't decide on which of the three to get so I would appreciate your input. Here's a rundown of what I'm looking to do with the pistol...

-To carry concealed at my work which involves sitting in an office, usually. The people I occasionally deal with are oblivious to their surroundings, but minimal printing is preferred.

-To carry concealed while hiking (printing not an issue)

-To carry openly while hunting

-Depending on the gun I buy, either a bathroom or bedroom pistol.


I like the 27 because I believe it to be easiest to conceal of the three. I shot it and enjoyed it more than shooting a 26. Also my hunting buddy has a 23, so we can share mags if we get attacked by a litter of bobcats. (I would be getting 23 mags for easier reloads.)

I like the 30 because I shot it well and it was quite pleasant. It is only 1/4" taller than the 27 when using a 9 round mag, and I just like the .45 cartridge. But I am worried about comfort when carrying IWB.

The 36 seems like it'd be the most comfortable IWB. I haven't shot it and won't be able to rent one, however, it felt good in hand. The 6 round mag is causing most of my reluctance to choose the 36. However, I do practice mag changes a lot at home and at the range.

By the way, I am 6'3", 195 pounds.

You have to just pick one and go with it. They all have benefits and compromises that you listed. I have preferred them all before but usually choose the G27 because of concealability and capacity. It shoots great but only has a two finger grip which is a less fun to shoot than a full grip, but is a trade-off for easier concealability. The G30sf is probably the easiest to shoot well for me but it is heavy and thick. That makes carrying it more of a burden than the other two.

The G36 is the slimmest of the three which helps concealability, but you lose magazine capacity and the ability to swap mags with other Glocks. They all shoot great and I've carried them all. I usually choose the g27 for reasons I listed and sometimes the g30sf because I really like the gun. Got rid of the g36 because I never shot it after getting the g30sf. It is easier to carry than the g30sf though because of thinness and lighter weight.

I think the 30sf is the best shooter of the 3 but it's weight and thickness can make it less comfortable to carry than the 27. But then I miss the full grip with the 27 sometimes.

So as you see there is no clear winner, just your personal preference and which traits you want to compromise on. Just choose one and go with it. They are all good.

Hey Mo, have you thought about a 23? Not much difference in size between a 23 and the two .45s you mentioned. Not a big fan of 40 in a Glock, and would recommend either a 9 or 45 but that's entirely subjective. My EDC is a 30s which for me is an ideal option, and it's not much different size-wise than a 19/23. A guy your size should not have a problem effectively concealing a 23 using a quality holster. I had a 36 before, and it was a great gun. I was able to shoot it quite well. The only reason I don't own one now is due to the increased mag capacity the 30s gives me. Good luck buddy! Get a 30.
if your stuck on a 40, you should look at an m&p 40c. Holds more ammo than the 27, conceals just as well, shoots softer and just as accurate, can shoot lead, was designed to shoot 40, and has a fully supported chamber so it won't blow up in your hands.

My suggestion: take a close look at the Glock 30s. You get the G36 slide with the G30sf frame and ammo capacity.

Agreed. Or if you can't get the 30s (it's not on the roster), you could do like I did and buy a 29 and a 36, and any time you want a 30S you can swap the 36 slide onto the 29 frame, and load up some g30 magazines. The 29 and 30 frames are identical by the way, but adds the ability to shoot 10mm/40s&w

Out of your choices I think the 30 is more versatile. You can do barrel swaps to 10mm and there is a 460 Rowland kit for it.The capacity is good on it as well. I've owned all three guns you mentioned. The 36 is my choice for EDC, but hiking and camping I prefer the 30 or a 29

My choice is the Glock 27. As small as you can get with a big bullet at close to max capacity for CA.

or do it the way I did it and get a rostered 29SF and add a factory 30S upper slide/barrel from GunBroker to get to a 30S. There are three or four reliable guys on GunBroker selling new uppers at fair prices.

The 36 is kind of an odd ball glock as the mags dont interchange with larger guns like the 35/22/23/27 do and its limited to 6 for a fairly large gun.

The 27 would be the best choice (although I prefer the 26) its much easier to conceal and if it were me I would run pearce +1 pinky extensions on it for a true 10+1. Plus you can run 9mm and 357 sig if you choose too.

I'd carry the G36 and carry it and pepper spray for the outdoor environment. I think the pepper spray would be more effective for the outdoor animals. I'd get the bear spray types you see.

I have thought about the 23, it might be my favorite Glock actually. But after trying it on in a hybrid holster, I have decided against it due to height.

I'd love to do that but it is out of my budget. How is the reliability on your 29 when running the 36 upper?

Well stated. All good points and I am leaning towards the 27 because of the reasons you mentioned.

Both my buddy and I have discussed pepper spray and decided against it for cats and coyotes. We figured that if a cat had put a stalk on us, we probably would not get a chance to deploy pepper spray. And if a group of coyotes were to follow us, we would prefer to use them for ballistics testing

The G36 is a great carry pistol.

Thin and light weight, along w/ its thin and light weight mags.

It bumped my G23, and uses the same holsters.


P.S. They aren't Barbi-dolls... G36 mags work fine in the G36.

And thank you to everyone for your opinions. Currently I am siding with the Glock 27 due to ammo capacity, ammo cost, weapon size, and mag compatibility with the bigger .40's.
