    1911 help please

    Hi Folks,
I would like to please ask for gun value opinions, if I may.

Looking to sell a Colt 1911 made in 1948. Edit: 1/15/15 Already sold to friend.

I was under the impression that the gun would be worth about $2,200. At least this is what others seem to be going for. Some in rough shape at about $2,000 Gunbroker.com has one at $2,700, in like new condition.

All of the guns I have seen are in original condition. However it looks as if my 1911 may have been re blued.

The gun looks as if it has shot very few rounds. I have owned it for about 20 years and have fired about 100 rounds through it.

Assuming that the gun has been re blued, what would be an approximate price for privet sale?

Thanks in advance for any info.

It's not reblued,at least from your pictures but definitely has finish
problems from improper storage or something else. It has an ugly
slide stop scratch, also. I would cut your values about in half,if you
really want to get it sold. Others can chime in ,I'm no expert just going
by what I see. It's probably ok mechanically, and that's assuming
the bore is not pitted. It will definitely need to be refinished.
Someone may want it as candidate for building a custom gun.
Good luck whatever you do. Pete

The below one cost me $750 a few years ago. It's a 1947 made Colt Commercial. I presume yours is a Commercial as well. Anywhere north of $2K for that era I would expect it to be a Property of US Gov. GI bring back.

That pistol in that Condition should fetch 900/1200. It does not look to have been refinished, but it is in fair Condition at best. The trigger has lots of wear and big idiot scratch and wear on the front strap. If it was 38 super 1200/1500. If you have the box/paperwork and the original magazine maybe more than 1200. That's a shooting grade pistol and probably a great one. If someone offers you more than 1100 take the money and run. Like the other poster said US GOV then maybe. Nice Pistol though.

It varies so much. What I think is a good deal at $1000 the next guy may give you $2000. But then the area you live in might call that a $750 pistol.

Good luck and welcome to Calguns my friend.

            ^ this

i want to get an old colt 1911 (with a series 70 as a "backup" option) but in that condition, unless it were under $900 (want but wouldn't mind letting it go), and ideally $800-850 (motivated buyer price), i'd just go with a new series 70. on the flip side though, i could see someone for other reasons paying up to $1500 for it if you don't mind waiting up to a year or two to sell it at that price.

if you want another reference level, the gun above that snoopy paid $750 for i would have paid about $700-750 as well, although i was probably biased by seeing his price first.

I had to sell a colt for my uncle who could not have a firearm, and always regret not finding the money to become the purchaser. Why would you want to sell a colt?

If it has the original finish, do not refinish it. Any collector value it does have now will be diminished with a refinish.

“Why would you want to sell a colt?”

                    Well… Um… You see…. Uh…
                    OK, darn it.

I’m selling it to a friend so I can buy a camera lens.
My shooting buddies are already giving me a hard time, but please feel free to add to the fun, if you like.

Because truth be told, sometimes there more to "shooting" a quality firearm than "Nostalgia".

I agree, but the Colts built from that era are built top notch. They just don't have "nostalgia". Post War and Pre Series 70 Colts are fantastic pistols. If you ever owned or got the chance to fire one you would agree.

my wife says that guns and photography are actually the same hobby - they both involve "shooting" things and require ridiculously expensive equipment.

Don't beat yourself up bro. You are on CalGuns, so people may tend to make you feel bad for parting with a fine gun. But if you go to a photography forum counterpart, people might be cheering you for the lens that you got.

Anyways, it still stayed with your family, right? Well, ok, friend, but you can still shoot it, I would imagine. Just shoot it once in a while and take pictures of it with your camera with new super duper lens

                              Move on and stay happy
