Yesterday I spotted a nickel Colt Detective Special. If I had the money to spare I'd have bought it. Even now I'm thinking about what can I trade to get it.

I have seen and handled some tight revolvers but this particular gun is among the top 5 I have ever handled. It's about equal to my vintage bull barrel model 10 that my father bought me 20 years ago.

It's been a while since I squeezed a trigger on a colt and I don't remember them being like this. The trigger is very smooth but the pull feels like it has half the travel of the trigger on my 642. This little Colt felt so perfect that I think I've fallen in love again!

The problem I have about buying it is that it cannot replace my 642. I wouldn't carry a snub with an exposed hammer otherwise I'd figure out a way to buy it.

If anyone is into Colts and wants to know which shop has this one, send me a pm.

          Detective Specials vs. S&W 642

Colt Detective Specials are nice guns. I bought one new about 1993, near the end of the last production run, and have had it ever since. The gun has a nice blue job and an excellent trigger, either double or single action. The DA trigger is much better than a S&W 642, in my opinion. It is not really a pocket gun, weighing 21 ounces empty, having an external hammer, and being larger than a 642. But you can shoot it accurately much easier than a 642. And it gives you 6 shots instead of 5.

I wouldn't consider it a pocket gun by any means. It's about the size of a K-frame and with the exposed hammer forget pocket carry. I feel the trigger is better than on my 642 but I wouldn't replace my 642 with it even if it had shrouded hammer. It's just too large and heavy for pocket carry. For carrying on a hip holster if would be very fine. I don't remember the exact price but it was over $500.

Did colt make the same gun in 357 mag?

For a short period in the middle 1990s Colt made a stainless Detective Special in .357 magnum called the Magnum Carry. Not very many were made, and today they are considered a collector's item, bringing a pretty healthy price.

The Colt magnum carry is similar and in.357mag, was not made very long. Other guns Colt made in a 2" .357 mag configuration were the LawmanMKIII.
