1911 Commander Recommendations Needed

I'm interested in a commander length 1911 and am looking for some input and recommendations.

Do you guys recommend the aluminum or steel for these?

Which mid to high quality brands/models between $750-1500 do you recommend?

I've been eyeing a Para Elite Commander as it seems like a good value. Thoughts on these?

The only ones I would consider are the dan wesson cbob and the ed brown kobra carry.

Ed Brown Kobra Carry is going to cost you though...

I have mixed feelings about the cbob due to some dan wesson issues I had in the past, but I will just chalk it up to a lemon and more than likely give them another shot in the future.

*** This is subjective and based only on reviews as I have not shot either. The Dan Wesson PM-9 I have had in the past came with slight tooling marks on the breach face, but they helped me as best as they could without replacing the slide which seemed overkill for not having a functional issue.

Dan Wesson CBOB. It's on the roster. It might break your upper limit on the budget by $100-$200.

I'd ask what role the gun would be filling before offering suggestions.

I agree, have you ever fired a commander Length 1911? they do recoil a bit more than the government model.the aluminum framed models only amplify the recoil trust me. And I would stay away from the Para. Wesson, Colt, Sig are best in your price range.

Another vote for the vbob. It's heavy to carry but, shoots well

have you tried a commander sized before? im not very sensitive to recoil but there is a very noticeable difference for me when shooting a commander sized 1911 with hotter loads back to back with a full sized 1911, both steel. yet in other platforms where there is a bigger difference in size between a compact and full size, i don't notice the difference as much.

Forget Aluminum in 1911s for the reasons stated ^^^.

That said, there are very few on roster and they are all good for the price. DW is good but pricy. Look for a Sig. They are the best bang for your $ and have all the options and shoot as accurate as any $3K 1911. I say this eventhough sig gave me a hard time when I needed them.

I own a couple of commander sized 1911's and love my round butt Smith & Wesson Performance Center 1911 with the scandium frame. It is very light but still shoots very smooth. One of my favorite guns and I have many. With that said, I do not own the Cbob or the Kobra (which is on my short list)

As for Para, I recently fondled one of the Para USA Black Ops and was very impressed. Very tight and smooth. Felt like a hi-end piece.

Lower end of your price point would be a Ruger SR1911 CMD.

All stainless, runs 100% and worth the $750 bucks.

Hickok45 has some videos on the full size and CMD models. He likes them.

Thanks for the input guys. Yes, I have shot a commander. Actually, it was a Para Elite Commander Ducks Unlimited version and I was impressed with it so that's my starting point for this search but I am certainly open to anything reasonable. I own a Springfield TRP Operator, so I have a good feel for the differences between the sizes and higher end quality.

This gun will be used as a range gun most of the time but may be a carry gun from time to time. I am generally not recoil sensitive, but appreciate knowing if certain guns have uncharacteristic muzzle flip, etc.
