    The M9A3

The Army, according to this report, is pursuing two separate programs for a new standard sidearm.

The first is called the Modular Handgun System, MHS, which would be an all new replacement or upgrade of the existing M9 (aka Beretta 92).

The second is called the Engineering Change Proposal, ECP. Under the ECP, Beretta has produced the M9A3, which is an upgraded M9. The Army has awarded Beretta a contract for 100,000 more M9s, but it isn't clear from this report whether those are the existing model or the A3.

Let me speculate here: The Army wants a brand new pistol, but the Obama regime has squeezed DOD so much that maybe the Army can't buy one yet. There would be lots of competitive bids for the MHS program and you can bet Sig would be among them. Instead, as another interim measure, the Army has resorted to the ECP program.

Notice the spec for a "thin grip" on the A3 version. Women in combat, gentlemen. Beretta says it will release a commercial version of the A3 at this year's SHOT show. I want one, but don't know if us children in Brownifornia will be deemed responsible enough to own one.

It won't be the roster that's for sure.

Besides the Vertec style grip I really don't see how the M9A1 is much different from the 92G-SD Beretta is reviving.

A new side arm seems like a waste of money. The M9 is easy to shoot and to teach people to shoot. Very accurate. I have a 92 F from the early 90s and it is still going strong. Police trade so not the prettiest but one of my more reliable and accurate handguns. Just replaced the night sights

Not the ones they have in the military. Most of the M9 in the armory is so well worn that it definitely needs to be replaced.

Yea all the m9's we had were crap, granted they had tens of thousands of rounds through them but FTEs were common. Basically all they were good for is for staff and officers to get out of carrying around a rifle in the field

Lack of regular maintenance is not indicative of a failure of the weapon system. The 92fs is far from the best, but good enough is good enough. I can't see the point in dumping money into a whole new pistol when wars are won with rifles, artillery, tanks, and aircraft. Pistols are for (the most part) people not directly in combat.

True true. But in the United States Military, winning is not enough. You have to look good while you're doing it. Same reason why the Army and Navy spends million of dollars trying to change the uniform every 5 years.

Ha! I had a customer that went under because the Army and Navy weren't changing uniforms fast enough due to budget cuts.

I'll be happy with the 92G-SD that's ON ROSTER.

So true, and THE ultimate uniform nonsense was the Navy adopting blue camos for shipboard wear! So, if a sailor falls overboard, which does happen, he'll be more difficult to see in the water. Besides, who are you going to hide from aboard ship while wearing camos?

Us old salts are outraged at this idiocy. It's a well documented fact that girls liked the traditional Navy uniforms both officer and enlisted. We don't want to look like wannabe Army types.

Agree...I also have an older civilian 92 and love it.

The advantage of a metal gun is I can always use it in a non ballistic fashion.

I just heard the bum scoop that the M9a3 is turned down by the Army. Trying to look for an article now.

I guess the Army figured out that it's pretty much the same gun
