Mini-Range Review: Springfield XD subcompact Mod2

I thought I would post a quick "first impressions" report since I took my mod2 to the range last week.

Firstly- if you are repulsed, disgusted, or otherwise freaked out by the "grip zone" on this pistol then read no further. Turn back now or keep your GZ comments to a minimum. Yes it sucks, yes it’s lame - but when you grip the pistol you can’t see the writing anyway so get over it.

Secondly, this is a min-review because the SF Bay Area was super windy when I went out to shoot. Accuracy testing really wasn’t done due to the 30-40 mph gusts. My hand was literally moving all over from the wind so shooting for accuracy wasn’t possible. However I was really surprised that many shots were bullseyes despite the wind. I may do a part 2 if there is interest.

OK so I have all XD-S guns, an XDM and XD 45 sc. I am not really a SA fan boy and don’t shoot them all that often. But for some reason I was thinking of getting an XD subcompact in 9mm and when the mod2 was announced in November I ordered one.

    In short…
    • All shooting was done shooting off hand, left handed from 7 yards. I put 150 rounds of IMI 124g FMJ through it with no issues. Then I ran 20 or so Winchester Ranger 127g +p+ JHP with no issues. In fact the recoil felt almost the same as the FMJ ammo and the gun didn’t flip much.
    • It is a bit thick and a little top heavy (high bore) but actually points really naturally for me and recovers from recoil easily.
    • The trigger was great out of the box. I like the trigger better than my post-recall XD-S guns.
    • I couldn’t really test the “grip zone” because I was wearing gloves that day but the grip seemed really good to me.
    • I prefer a blacked out rear site rather than the 2 white dots but the red fiber optic in the front is also my preference so I am glad it comes with f/o fronts like the XD-S.
    • The absolute best feature IMO was the change made to the rear slide serrations. They added a ridge at the back that makes slide manipulation a breeze because your hand catches on the back of the slide easily and has lots of purchase (see pic below). It was a much more solid grasp for my fingers and I loved it.

If anyone has more questions I could do a part 2 to address them.
