1911 Takedown Tool

I'm looking to buy the tool to takedown a 1911. Mainly the tool to push down the recoil spring without tarnishing the paint. I have a Colt 1911 Government XSE. Thank you.

A bushing wrench is what you're looking for

You can also just push the plug down with your finger (although if it has the flgr, the hollow plug might hurt pushing with your finger) or the bottom of a lighter or something similar and then turn the bushing.

Your thumb is always with you, so why? If your bushing is a little too tight, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing - there's a poly-wrench for it.

Does your XSE still have the full length guide rod (FLGR)?.

my kimber came with a plastic tool

and its so stiff no way I can do it by thumb

ive also had the spring fly out across the room into my lcd monitor spiderweb crack half the screen

needless to say I rarely take out the barrel now

While the busted LCD sucks, you need to get back on the pony. You need to learn how to field strip your gun without collateral damage.

I just hold it into the couch cushions with a towel
so if it blows out the towel will catch it

I always forget which way to turn the bushing so thats how it can pop out
because I rarely shoot it and rarely take it apart

I see some videos with people doing by hand, but my spring must be so stiff there is no way to fully depress it without the tool

I use the bottom of a Bic lighter even though there are a few wrenches somewhere around me. Do any of these tools mentioned work in a way that is guaranteed to push/hold the recoil plug low enough not to be scraped by the bushing in rotation? I used one once over 20 years ago and the bushing scraped the face of the recoil plug which was a nicely blued piece. and have not touched one since.

You haven't had a good gun cleaning day till you have launched the plug and spring across the room or into the ceiling!

Every gun owner should have a set of punches that are made of steel, brass, and plastic. The plastic punch would be used in this situation.

If you do not have a set of punches then use the empty chamber flag that ships with almost every new gun. If you do not have that then use the back end of a disposable pen. Remove the ball point and ink cartridge and you have a cheap AR15 take down pin punch.

Whatever part you need to move use a tool softer than that part.
