Backpacking where? If it's Alaska, say, then you'd want to consider different guns compared with 3 day trips to Yosemite. For me (3 day trips are more like it), I like my MP340 - very light and small, and plenty of firepower for that sort of location. Anything heavier and I'm likely to leave it home, because I'm pretty ruthless about carrying absolute minimum weight. Do I *really* need a change of underwear and socks, or can I just bring what I'm wearing....

If it's just for backpacking I'd go with the G20. The cost of ammo wouldn't be a problem because it's not being shot that often. Have you considered the G29sf with the Pearce grip extension for the mag?

My answer depends on what you want it for. You hiking in the sierras....or in Alaska?
You worried about 2 legged problems or 4 legged?

Two legged would indicate a higher cap weapon with the knock down power being less of an issue.

Avg bear in the sierras is about 150# so you don't need the cannon for those that you would want for a 1,000# brownie in Ak.

Myself, I carry a 9mm auto that I shoot accurately in areas like the the sierras or somewhere I might run into a growing ground. I carry a shortened shotgun when bowhunting in Ak brownie country as i'm not a very accurate shot with my .44 revolver.

One thing about revolvers- I think they benefit from having a larger hammer to grip quickly and shoot accurately SA, that 141 has a small hammer.

All I have now is a Glock 22, I just want another pistol that could fill a different role. I always bring my .40 when I camp, backpack, hike, etc., and it feels too light.

Get the 20sf, shave the finger grooves and call it good.

My hike-able guns are my Ruger SP101 4.2" .357mag w/ Federal Vital-Shok 180gr A-frame partitions at 1100 fps or Underwood 158 XTP at 1400fps, my SW 625 JM .45acp w/ Underwood 230gr XTP 45Supers at 1100fps, and my G36 & G41 shooting the 45Supers on a heavy RSA.

Since you are considering a GP100, kinda heavy like the 625 is OK.

It still is my favorite w/ a wiide hammer and sweeet SA trigger.

I can draw and fire accurately faster than any other piece I have, even the Ruger.

For me, I pack the SP101 because I am out of shape and am sensitive to packing heavy, but the 625 is always on the buggy and in camp w/ me.

Yes, if you thought that Supers were a bit much for a G36 ... they are, but pretty nice in the G41.

I just found some gov't contract ACP 230+p fmj flat points for a field load for the G36 this week.

After I get the ZEV trigger shot in the G41 this next year, it might replace everything outdoors, and have the G36 as a SOB BUG.
