    454 Casull info

    Hey all,

I'm saving money while I"m overseas as a contractor and I want to buy a high powered revolver when I get back. I'm thinking about getting a 454 and wanted thoughts and opinions about them. I am doing my own research as well but of course any input from previous owners is good info to have. I appreciate any input. Thanks

If you are interested in a little more versatility, you could get a .460 S&W, it'll shoot .460, .454 casull, and .45 colt.

Advantage of the .454, say the Ruger, is 6 shots versus 5, and a tougher construction (though it is not like the SW XVR will blow up easily )

Also, the .460 is a more expensive gun (AFAIK only S&W make a model).

I was looking at the SW 460 because shooting 3 calibers out of one gun always appeals to me. But so far I only can find one manufacture so the guns seem pricey to me due to no competition. But I know I can shoot 45lc and 454 out of a Casull so I'm good with that.
Anyone on here actually owned or fired one. Pros Cons?

If you can get a FFL to do a SAE on an off-roster revolver...

There's the Wild West Guns Wolverine (customized Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan).
          It can shoot .454Casull, .45Colt, .45ACP (moonclip), .45GAP (moonclip), and .45AutoRim.

Depends on how you are going to use it.
Range plinker? Hunter? Dangerous game defense? All three?
I chose the S&W 460V for an all rounder.

I just bought a BFR in .454 and the trigger guard beats my middle finger to a pulp.
Love the big recoil but need to look into grip options to see if I can change the ergonomics.
My advice is to hold the guns you're thinking about and see how close it fits. It's going to jump even with the mighty Kung foo grip.

Well I usually buy guns based on mulit role use because that's what my budget allows when talking about a 800 to 1k$ gun. my future is kinda up in the air but I hopefully will be moving back to PA and there is bear and pig hunting up there and this would be an option to use this on. I am leaning towards the 460 because I would probably use in mostly for plinking using 45LC but I like having the option available to shoot a sasquatch if I see one. not that I would........ I like camping backwoods and there are bears out in the woods of PA. If I dont there are places I've been in Cali where I would've felt more comfortable camping with something more than a 22.

Shooting other large frame/high caliber guns for example DE 44mag and an a 41 mag. I have realized that even tho I am 6'2" I have smaller size hands for my size. So a kung foo grip is something I will have to work on. I've been able to handle those guns fine. Even though the ergo on them for operation is a bit off for me.

Desert Eagle in .50 and .44 mag is fine for me and my paws. Maybe the BFR is going to be a gun that has a set of gloves close by.

I became interested in the 454 Casull after seeing Hickok45 blast away a watermelon with one:

I've got a Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull

                          Pros:
                          Big Boom! Sometimes Big fireball
                          Fun range toy
If a T-Rex attacks you in the forest, you've got something that will take it down.
45 Long Colts are very mellow and good for shooting all day long if you'd like. You can of course step up to 454 when you're feeling the need for a little more oomph

                          Cons:
                          Big Boom! Sometimes big fireball
                          Ammo isn't cheap
those big 454 rounds...you're going to feel them. It's not the kind of gun that you're going to want to shoot 200 or 300 rounds in a session with

The Alaskan in particular, due to it's short barrel, would be a good gun to carry in the woods for protection from BIG critters. Also due to it's small barrel size though, it would suck as a hunting gun I think. I guess you can decide which means more to you.

An old video of a few friends and myself shooting mine...

I see cost was mentioned above, but its something to think about x2. I got my super redhawk in 44 mag. Had to find some local ammo. Paid .80$/round at walmart. I can usually get it on cabelas for .65$/round shipped. Looking at gunbot, 460, 454, 500...all well above 1$/round. I love shooting my super redhawk. Its my favorite gun. Its also more then 3 times more expensive then my sig in 9mm, and 10 times more expensive then my 2245.

Defiantly buy what you need/want, just for me personally, 1.15$/round or 1.60/round would do some damage to my bank account lol.

Yeah, the Ruger Super Blackhawk single-action 44 Mag with that "Dragoon" style trigger guard used to beat-up my middle finger like crazy!
In 454 Casull, I prefer the original: the Freedom Arms Model 83 "Five-shooter"---constructed like you can't believe---the fit and finish is the best! And yeah, I've owned a stainless Colt Python. I have two FA revolvers; a 6" and a 4 3/4"---plus and old Ruger single-shot #3 rifle rebarreled to 454...
Oh, and don't worry about the ammo cost too much---you won't be shooting it that much...
