Transporting gun to range

Brand-new gun owner. Wondering what is the correct way to transport my gun to the range.

(1) Does the gun have to be in a locked container in the car?

(2) Does it have to be in a locked container when I go into the range (indoor range)?

(3) Can I transport loaded magazines in my car, as long as they are not in the same container as the gun?

(4) Can I carry loaded magazines into the range, as long as they are not in the same container as the gun?

2) it has to be in a container, don't think it matters if it's locked
3) you can transport loaded mags in your car and in the same locked container as the gun as long as they aren't in the gun
4) I personally wouldn't but am unsure of the legality of doing so

I always thought that the trunk of a sedan is considered a locked container. Has that changed?

Nope locked trunk is good to go.

A side note for the original poster - DON'T USE THE GLOVEBOX, it is forbidden.

All of my mags are loaded before I go to the range, doubt they'd ever care but they don't check my ammo box, only the guns.

1) yes, Trunk of your car is Good to go. Pickup truck they need to be locked in a case.
2) No, most people use the case there gun came in or iPad sleeves.
3) you can transport loaded mags in your car and in the same locked container as the gun as long as they aren't in the gun
4) Depends on the range but I have never been told not too by any SOCAL range.

yes.

And the magazines can contain ammo.
And those magazines can be in the same range bag.

Hrrmmm wait..... is there a new law Jan 1 that requires if the container was not designed to carry a gun then the container must be locked?

Make sure that your trunk doesn't have a PASS THROUGH door (for ski equipments). Otherwise, it's not considered a locked container.

I have 2 SUV's (which wouldn't qualify as a secure trunk) and a BMW which has a pass through for ski equipment. So it looks like I'll have to use a locked container.

Depends

1. Handguns must be in a locked container or locked trunk. Glovebox does not count

2. 1000 ft. radius of a school, longgun must be in locked container, trunk, or locked onto a gun rack. Otherwise no requirement they be locked

3. All guns must be unloaded (unless you bought a muzzle loader... then it merely has to not be primed)

While in a range/gun show/ gun store, then open carry (unloaded) of a handgun is not illegal. However, to transport in through any public place outside of your vehicle, requires both that it be in a locked case and carried on the way to a legitimate destination (e.g. to your car, from a gunstore to your home, to a gun range)

So if you go to say Burro Canyon, then no, no locked container would be needed as the parking lot is part of their grounds. But if you park on a public street and then walk, you should have a locked case for a handgun

Longguns must either be in a case clearly distinguishable as a longgun case or otherwise locked

You can. You can transport them in the same container too. Just not in the gun.

(4) Can I carry loaded magazines into the range, as long as they are not in the same container as the gun?

Yes and they can be in the same container. Maybe a range here or there doesn't like that, but as far as the law goes there is no "separate container law"

Many cops don't know the laws. Just for good measure, I keep the guns locked and the ammo locked in a separate container.
