New Glock 17 Gen3 feeding issues

I recently purchased a new Glock 17 Gen3. The date for the test shells is October 31, 2014. I took it to the range for the first time today. (I gave it light lubrication before going).

I had four new ten-round magazines with me. I loaded them all to capacity, and inserted them into the magazine well on a closed slide. After racking the slide, the gun went into battery. On all four magazines, after the first shot, the shell casing ejected, but the second cartridge would not go into battery. After clearing the cartridge, the pistol would fire without issues until empty.

This happened repeatedly with each magazine. Each time, after the first shot was fired, the second cartridge would not go into battery. (If, however, I inserted a full magazine on an open slide, and then hit the slide stop button, the pistol would go into battery and fire all ten rounds without any feeding issues. If I downloaded the magazine to nine rounds, and inserted it into a closed slide, there would be no feeding problems. The problem only occurred with a magazine loaded to full capacity (ten rounds) on a closed slide.)

Finally, after experiencing the feeding problem about 2-3 times with each magazine, they started working without any problems. The last 200 rounds were flawless.

Were the initial feeding problems simply a matter of "breaking in" the magazine springs? I've never encountered this issue with my other Glock 9mm Gen3 pistols and magazines. Is this something unique to the recent Gen3s? Thanks in advance for your response.

What ammo were you using (exactly) and what follower is in the magazine (number is on top of the follower)

      Yes.

This is common for many pistols that are using neutered 10 round mags. If you use broken in standard capacity mags, I am almost certain that this problem would go away.

I was using the Walmart Federal Champion, 115 gr. FMJ 9mm for the first 100 rounds (the ones with the issues). The last 200 rounds I used Winchester white box 115 gr. FMJ.

The followers were all number 2183-2. The magazines were all Gen4.

I would leave the mags full until your next range trip as it may take the edge off the spring, and then see if you still have the problem. Seems like you are using good ammo.

It seems like you have a broken glock. I'll take it off your hands for 350. ;-)

A quick Google search reveals that the 2183 followers are the source of the problem. Switch to the newer 9mm3 followers and your problem wouldn't have happened.

Newer follower design on the right.

Glock will probably send the 9mm3 followers to you for free. Some people swear by one and some by the other. May as well have both on hand in case this problem continues to plague you.

Yes - I have read that they will replace them for free. I cannot report personal experience here, though.

The followers for the standard mags vs neutered mags are shaped much different. Some people get new followers and it fixes the issue, some don't have the same luck. many threads on cal guns regarding it. most of these feeding issues come into play with HP ammo. Yay neutered mags!

I had the same issue with my gen 3 17c when it was new. Since the first few times at the range I have not had an issue in 5 + years.

I chalked it up to break in...

                          Thanks, everyone, for the feedback.

I was not aware of the issues with the 2183-2 followers. I do have two ten-round Glock 19 magazines with 2183-2 followers, and never had any issues with them through several hundred rounds (mostly FMJ).

As I stated, the problems today resolved after about shooting each magazine 2-3 times, which is why I thought it was just stiff springs that needed to be broken in. But, to be on the safe side, I plan to switch to the 9mm3 followers.

Be sure and test with your favorite defense ammo after a little more break in, that is where things usually get interesting if they are going to.
