    Thoughts on S&W 686 Plus Pro 5in?

Hi all. I have been eyeballing this revolver for a few months now. I'm sure you all know that sitting on the fence on a handgun for months is an astronomical feat of willpower. Rest assured I have been busy with SSE's . Now that I'm SSE'd out for the year I have set my sights on this gun once again. I'm sure someone here must have this model. Any issues or thoughts you'd like to share? I'm not sure what the hub-bub is/was about the internal lock, or if this model even has one. My only revolver at this time is a 6" Ruger GP100 Stainless. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Looks like it's still on roster without the "A".

686-6 Plus Pro Series (Stn Stnls) SKU 178038 / Stainless Steel

I think the hub-bub around the internal locks are similar to mag safeties or those big flag LCIs. Some see it as an abomination, others are OK.

The lock can easily be removed and plugged. I bought a 627PC and i'm not disappointed.

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND WAIT FOR A PRE-LOCK 686 ON THE FORUMS.

Did they make a pre-lock Plus? In 5"?

            Love my 4" 6-shot...

Yes, the 686-5 but it's hard to find.

Last one I saw sold for $1,300 and that was years ago. With today's price, yikes!

Ps. what I recommend to most, get a solid used pre-lock ($700) and rebarrel it. Barrels can be found on eBay and Gunbroker all the time. S&W will install any size barrel and tune for $110. The pre-locks usually come with amazing triggers, so that part is basically done.

Also, if you find a no dash or -1 without the M stamp, call S&W for the recall and they'll pay the shipping. While at S&W have them install the barrel. This way you can get around the shipping cost.

Is the 627 a different frame size than the 686?

Frankly I wouldn't worry too much about the lock, many Rugers have them too but underneath the grips so no one is concerned with them...

Seem to be very nice guns. I have the 686SSR 4" for competition and so far the lock and MIM parts have not caused my head to explode or my children to drop dead. I also have a 4" 686-2, and while nice, I prefer the balance of the SSR model.

Many S&W revolver fans will tell you that a 5" barrel is a great balance between accuracy and mobility. If you are lusting after it, get it, shoot it, and enjoy it. People will always be wetting their pants over models with the locks, but the guns are fine weapons, nonetheless.
My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.

After going unused for several years I came to realize something on my last range trip... I love my 686 (hand cannon). Bring one with you to the range and you will be supprised that everyone wants to shoot it.
